My nitrate is out of control im doing water changes twice a day almost 50% each time just to keep it at .3 mg/l what should i do???

what size tank, and what is in it- also what filtration do you use?

10 gallon with a small red bellied piranha and an aquaclear 20 this setup is temporary until the bigger tank is ready but now im not sure what to do i already rescued him from a friend that was going to just kill it because he didnt want it anymore

Do you mean nitrates or nitrites?

Is there any chance you have something that might have died in the tank? I spent days trying to control a tank with high readings.

I finally tore the whole tank apart (leaving fish inside) and found a dead fish hiding behind the heater. Is it possible you have something inside the tank that would do this? If you can, move or remove everything until you have nothing left and then do a water change.

well i have been searching there is only the one fish possibly some old shrimp but iv been vacuuming every day while doing the water change i will try taking everything out of the tank like you said but the fish is really stressed out right now and i just looked at the bigger tank i had set up for the fish and the whole bottom has hairline cracks so its junk

Keep the lights off and make it as dark as possible for your friend. He might calm down a bit. If you have been vacuuming, probably there isn't anything in there, or you have already gotten it out.

You didn't mention if you were referring to nitrites or nitrates.

Nitrates don't have to be at 0, but nitrites do.

how long has that tank been set up? if that is nitrItes, then i would dare to say the tank isnt cycled yet.

the tank is only been set up for a few weeks but with no problems. then a sudden spike so sounds like a text book case any suggestions on what to do i really dont want to lose this fish
