that tank is still new. once you see your ammonia levels drop you will see a spike in nitrites. thats normal. that bacteria will then be consumed and converted to nitrates. you can do small waterchanges to help lower your level of nitrites, but i wouldnt do a big one, because you may just be starting over again. you said its only been set up for a few weeks and that is exactly right-your ammonia levels should have dropped,and you should be in the middle of a nitrite spike right now.. a week from now youll notice a drop in that, and a rise in nitrate levels-which are the least harmful of all three.
