Herbie style questions

One thing you might want to consider for the box with your returns. Since there will be no flow inside the box you will probably have some stagnant water in there due to lack of circulation. You could either put a powerhead in there to help circulate or you could fill it with sand, creating a deep sand bed. This is how Bean himself approaches his system on tanks with dual corner overflows. Just something to consider.

I'm having my new tank built with dual overflows as well, but I'm having three holes in each box, (2) 1 1/2" (1) 1". The 1" will be my returns since I need this tank to be flush against the wall, and each box will have a full siphon 1 1/2" drain that will join together, Herbie style, under the tank into a single 2" line with a 2" gate. The left box will be my emergency and the right box will have an 1 1/2" standpipe that will serve as a dry chamber for all lighting cables and such. Lots of guys on reefcentral have run two full siphon drains connected to a single line and gate with great results. Not saying you should, but it seems to work well since one gate controls the water level in both boxes.

Thanks jc. I was thinking that you could join two syphins w a larger pipe under the stand.

I haven't done it yet, but I spend alot of time on reefcentral and it seems to be the way most folks approach running two siphons. I've seen a few systems over there running two siphons with separate gate valves on each, but I would imagine they are constantly having to adjust since one valve has to have an effect on the other. One larger valve for both drains seems to he the preferred way. Or, simply do what your doing and dedicate each box for different duties.

I'll find out soon enough....

Good luck with yours!!

Thanks again! I found myself on reefcentral a lot too! I sort of want to try the dual syphins w one valve, but I think all I'm going to need is one syphin. I'm gonna have to order a gate valve to as it seems no one local carries them. I have my syphon plumbed w a ball valve. I gotta get return lines tonight and I think I'm just gonna play w the ball to see if I can get it right. The tank is still in my garage so I can do some playing!

I never knew building this stiff could be so much fun. I'm also surprised at the lack of response from the members on this site. I guess the reefer guys really do know how to plumb ***** up haha

I was a bit surprised more folks over hear weren't using the Herbie or Bean methods. Sure does make it quiet.

I had the same problem finding gates locally. I ended up ordering online as well. I bought ( 2)1 1/2" gates first, then thought better and went with one 2". It's pretty cool too because it's clear PVC so I'll be able to see how closed it it without pulling the plumbing apart. Got mine at Flexpvc.com for less than $20.

Awesome man, thanks for input. I def think there should be a sticky on different types of overflows to help out others who want to try it

My two siphons into one is awesome. I have my two 1" drains dump into two 1-1/2" elbows which then lead into a tee to a 1-1/2" pvc gatevalve. Best system even though it's my first. Super quiet on top and quiet in my sump. Hats off to them reefer guys over on the other site.

That would be awesome!! I nominate jcardona1 to start since he's run both Herbie and Bean!!:)

Then we can all add our own tweaks..

I love the idea

Yup! Jcardona for sticky and MOD!

Seriously it would be an awesome way to show and learn more about both. My tank is plumbed and filling up. Wish me luck
