home defence (not a bash thread!)

:)nine iron and pittbull for me. Actually, during Ike I was out of ammo, so that's what I depended. Thankfully I didn't have to use the 9 iron, would like to actually hit a ball with it before I bust someones head.

Fact is high powered rifles penatrate too much. Even with ballistic tips the potential for a through and through is very real. Hell, deer get shot with fragmenting bullets every day that pass clean through them. Plus they still can run 50 yards before dropping.
Key to home defense isn't penatration, it's what is going to but the bad guy on the floor. A .233 doesn't cut it for me. Sure a 16 round clip in the guy and he's done, but remember the deer that ran fifty yard. A know a 55 grain bullet usually isn't putting a 200 lb man down for count before he moves closer to me than I want. Sure, a head shot, but have a buddy thow balling balls at you all day from 15 feet and see if you hit every one.
Give me a big slow moving bullet with mild expansion to put someone down. .45 acp, 40 s&w, #5 12 guage, .44 special, 45 long colt.

Shotguns with #4 buckshot will carry through six drywall boards. A .223 can easily pass through 12 drywall boards. Even frangible bullets pass through walls.

A shotgun with rounds other than buckshot make good home defense rounds. Buckshot over penetrates. #5 shot does horrendous damage to soft tissue at 15 yeards or less. Must home encounters are at a much shorter distance.

Why should you not be worried? Bullets pass through walls. What are you shooting that can't penetrate dry wall and yet will stop an intruder?
You know where your family is in in an apartment perhaps, but then you are dealing with outer walls to neighbors. Same with a home. What percentage of the gun owning populace has the "training" to handle these situations?

I clearly stated correct ammunition.. I've never stated myself that all should take my approach.

In my case a frangible round is perfectly acceptable if not more suited. I live in a house made in the 1920's my walls are solid brick, My floors are 2 inches thick. I'm not really worried about what is on the other side of a wall all that much. Note: No drywall here.....

To this question: If you do not have firearm training then you would be better to lock yourself into a room and rely on 911 to come get you. If you are not trained in firearm self defense technique then you have no business trying. Your nothing but a threat to yourself and others (other than bad guy). If you do not understand what you are doing with a firearm in a hostile situation then drop it and leave it to a professional (when ever they might arrive). If you do not have training then get training..

my .223, .45, and 12ga are all within easy reach, but if i were in a SHTF situation, i would probably grab the shotgun first. i dont know what it is, but there something reassuring about the destructive force of a 3" magnum 15 pellet 00 buckshot round :D

All I have for self defence is a freakin paintball gun -__- lol thats the only legal thing i can hold anyways...lol I have some old paintballs that I can freeze and have already modded the gun to go for 500 FPS and 800 FPS with Highly Pressurized Co2 and Air Tanks Loaded with heat exchanging heat rods to make the balls go on fire when shot out through the barrel...xD thats all i can do...this household of ours doesn't have a real defense up yet...all we have is a steel bat and a wooden hammer with nails running all around the bat.

shoot first, ask questions later :)

No more, no less.

Now we are to believe that out of all MFKers who have posted in this thread ( all five pages of it ) allmost all enter into the "weapons trained" category??

Give me a break, please.:)

I actually disagree with the statement that every should be trained. I think everyone needs to know how to operate a weapon safely but not every one needs to be trained like a SWAT member to be able to effectivly defend off a bad guy with a gun.

yeah i agree. not sure what type of weapons training poly was refering to, but most gun owning civilians havent had any hardcore tactical training. at least i havent. afterall, im not in SWAT. and thats not to say im an idiot with a gun either. i know how to handle a gun and shoot w/o having had any formal training.

i do practice with a friend of mine thats in law enforcement though...

lol :D
