How are everyone's Beani doing?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
We're talking about Beani, not the fish you listed.

mate are u serious i was so busy for a month that i totally forgot i had fish and didnt wc and fed every other day an all is good with my cuban, nic, altrifons and the cats

We started with a group of 4. We lost 2 due to divider issues (my fault). The 2 we have left (both male, I'm afraid), have a bulletproof divider, and no issues. We've grown them from 1.5" up to the current 4-5". I can't claim that I've done a great job on water changes...just lucky, I guess.

I got 8 from Dan Woodland as well. They were about 0.75" when I got them. I've had no issues with them. They are 2-2.5" now and in a 55g tank. They get spirila flakes twice a day and a 60% water change once a week. Still have all 8 and they are doing great. Hoping to get 3 pairs out of the group time will tell.

I think the main thing with young Beani is to not over feed and feed spirila based flakes or a low protein flake food. I feed small amount twice a day and the fish are growing well and on there way to adulthood. I think small amount of food is the key.

There are some at a LFS by me (~1-2"-ers) and they seem to be doing great. Probably eating whatever the LFS feeds and packed into a 20H...

My favorite spirulina flake is Kensfish Tropheus Lovers. Good stuff!

Matt

KENS PREMIUM TROPHEUS LOVERS FLAKE:

GUARANTEED ANALYSIS: CRUDE PROTEIN 45.0% MIN., CRUDE FAT 4.0% MIN., CRUDE FIBER 3.0% MAX., MOISTURE 8.0% MAX.

Would CRUDE PROTEIN 45% Minimum be considered high for a recommended low protein diet? When Ive had fish needing those requirements, I thought that was too high. Was I wrong?

Most of my food is between 40-50%...and the lowest protein I see in any of Kens flakes is 39% on the goldfish flakes.

I believe even the algae wafers I have are around 45%. Is there any food that has less protein?

Anything made for tropheus should work great. They bloat very easily. I should have said no fatty foods instead of no high protein. I think fatty foods like bloodworms, meaty pellets, etc are what cause a lot of folks problems

I'm always surprised to hear these horror stories about bloat in Beani. I recently sold a group of 8 that I got from Dan, I had no problems whatsoever with them. I kept them in a 40 breeder fed them NLS growth as their staple with earthworm sticks, spirulina flakes, and frozen bloodworm/brine shrimp once or twice a week. I do large WC on all my tanks once or twice a week and the temp is kept around 80-82 degrees, as a matter of fact I keep bartoni in these exact same condictions, I got them from DC and they are nice really nice. I regret selling my Beani I got a stupid offer I was thinking I could easily replace them so far I havent. I got them in Nov at the Cichlid Extravaganza at about 1" the largest was about 4" when I let them go. I've kept them in the past with no problems good luck to all and someone breed them please lol!

By the way if anyone cares The spirulina flakes are Jehmco's pure spirulina flakes, the earthworm sticks are from Angels Plus I forgot to mention Angel Plus spirulina sticks, and the frozen bloodworms and brine shrimp are either from Wet Thumb or Hikari's frozen goods. I crumble the sticks as they're a little to big for the smaller fish.

LoL after reading my own post my whole fish room is on this exact same diet with the exception of the larger fish get frozen krill or mysis. My Haiti's love mysis as well as the escondido Jack Dempseys. The Tetracanthus are just greedy I haven't fed them anything that they didn't make me feel wasn't their favorite. However the Umbies won't mess with any flakes whatsoever. I've been experimenting more with Omega One products the fish enjoy it but I've noticed an increased amount of waste and I mean alot more. I haven't noticed any increase in color or growth but it hasn't been very long.
