a couple of shots of vodka into the water bucket...heh drunk tilt.

This is just an idea I have no idea if it will work. .If you are concerned about affecting other fish you put in the tank because you think there is some kind of disease you should soak the tank while the fish are still there with household bleach. A cup of bleach would do it. And let it cycle. But remember to remove all the gravel and decor before you add bleach.
That should get them good.
I like the knife idea too. :FIREdevil

Go throw it in local lake. Don't worry about killing it.
dont throw a fish in a lake thats a no no...

Hey do not kill your fish even if they are sick. You will never learn how to treat diseases unless you get some practice. Give it a shot. If your fish die oh well. If you learn from the experience that is all that matters. Maybe next time you will save them.

I have seen some say clove, this does work well!!! Oil of clove add it to the water it is an ansthetic and will put your fish to sleep. So far into sleep they never wake up!

Fish are cold blooded. Cold blood means the temperature around you governs the speed of your brain, heart, lungs, all bodily functions. With a sudden shift to cold temperatures, with ectothermic crittters, the body's functions slow rapidly, the first to shut down is the conscious brain, the same with warm bloods too, then the lungs, then the heart, and finally, the whole brain (if not frozen completely first from excessive cold).

Therefore, freezing is extremly Humane. The fish falls asleep seconds after the door is shut (allowing minimal water).

Baking soda just seems wrong, taking oxygen away is plain and simple suffocation. As the lungs dont take in oxygen, carbon dioxide accumulates in the blood and gives a burning sensation. Very painful, very sad.

You asked for Humane. Freeze 'em.

*However, i think the vodka idea was nice, ethical with a buzz*
