I have to agree with teh clove oil option, anesthize them first before doing anything else, or just over anestheize them, at least they fade away painlessly

Go throw it in local lake. Don't worry about killing it.

Oh yeah, you thought that one out real well. If the fish doesn't die from the cold temps in the first place, it'll just get picked up by wildlife bureaus and banned by the state. Great thinking. :clap

Howdy,

First: Describe the symtoms and we'll see if anyone of us maybe had the same disease in the tank and maybe we can help you save your fish. Also, please state which med you tried and at what dosage. Just one thing: I hope you didn't filter thru carbon (charcoal) during the treatment since the meds get adsorbed on it instead of getting absorbed by the fish.

Second: If all treatment (and our input) fails, and to answer the initial post: Bang on the head, then a cut in the heart (carp, catfish) or cut the head off (just to be on the safe side). That's how you do it when you go fishing, it is quick and the fish won't realize it. Freezing is supposingly painless, since the senses dull by hypothermia. I can't tell and I don't want to find out. However, the fish are stressed in the anticipation of death, by being housed in a small container. That also applies to the other "remedies". The only advantage of the options other than the bang on the head is the fact that death occurs indirectly, which might be easier on your conscience. I personally find it hypocritical. Get it over with fast, for the sake of the fish. But try what you can before you choose to kill. You owe it to your fish.

Don't ever give up. Keep treating it maybe try some different medication combos. i've lost a few fish over the years but i never gave up treatment.

wrap the fish in a damp paper towel then destroy the brain, once the brain is destroyed the fish is dead -Anne

(cold blooded huh)but its the fastest most painless way to do it

First I would throw them in my piranha tank and laugh histerically as they rip half its body apart but still keeping it alive. then I would suck its intestines out. Then i would i would throw it all into a blender and hit FRAPPE... then feed it to my black skirt tetras i have been starving.... but thats just what i would do...

I hope you're not serious.

He's talking about sick fish, I wouldn't feed sick fish to other fish.

When I needed to cull angel or cory fry I'd just put them in a plastic tub with water, enough clove oil to make the fish go to sleep, snap on a top, and put it in the freezer. Then, I'd dump the fish ice cube into my rose garden, free fertilizer!

I've had to put sick fish down before, too. There comes a point where the cure is costing more than the fish is worth, or the fish is old and not likely to recover. Of course, up until lately all I've kept were tetras, cories, angels, and other small "cheap" fish, nothing that I'd consider a "pet".

just for the record... angels, corys, tetras and other such "cheap" fish are just as worthy of trying all ya can for em as all those overpriced, overblown "pets" alot of you are keeping....
