how do you feel about fancy goldfish?

yea but have u seen an english bulldog lol.....most flatnose breeds of dogs have allot of breathing difficulties which is one reason why they snore and grunt allot...dachshunds are incredibly prone to back problems even breaking...also toy breeds like chihuahuas are to having their kneecaps and other joints slip due to being bred down to such a small scale and its similiar with the large dogs like labs with their hip displaysia...all these ailments arent a result of old age, young dogs even puppies get those kinds of injuries due to selective breeding.....its pretty neck and neck really between who "has it worse" dogs or goldfish when it comes to injuries and ailments due to breeding....the thing is these animals are never miserable unless they arent taken care of properly. whats cruel may not actually be the breeding of the fish (and dogs respectively) but putting them in situations where they can get hurt or sick due to their features-ie taking a bulldog on a 5 mile run with you or putting bubble eyes in a tank full of pointy ornaments

Be carful with those natural guppys, i started out with 3 and now i have about 50.

They will breed to no end, and they will eventually aqure defects and illness from overpopulation. make sure you have a large enough tank to hold large amounts of guppy. good filtration. and maybe even a medium sized predator to deal with the slower offspring once population becomes a problem. ;) I've even had TB and and dropsy outbreaks from obvious overcrouding. but besides that they don't die.

thanks for the warning, i'll wait till my buddy has his tank set up again...he's thinking about getting something mildly predatory like a freshwater moray, so i'll know where to put those spare guppies
also, in summer i can "out-source" some into my garden pond...till winter comes i'll have a bigger tank for sure and maybe some piranhas

are you saying that dogs are as equally deformed as goldfish?

It may not be as dramatic, but definitely. Pugs, sharpei, shih tzu, dachshund, bulldogs, chihuahua, etc. These were all essentially bred from wolves - but if you lined them all up, you'd be amazed they are all the same species. We don't call the shape of the dachshund or the folds on a sharpei deformities, but that is exactly what they are... deformities we bred for.

Breeds that have hip and knee problems are equally cruel... their lives would be cut short in the wild, and it isn't a problem that just happens as they get older. Lots of dogs get weird problems (think about pugs!) that wouldn't really be around in the natural population, because the animal born with those traits would die before they reproduce.

Rare cancers are sometimes non-existant in mutts or most breeds, yet are rampant in certain breeds. My dad is a vet and he can almost diagnosis a dog based on the breed... i.e. a large fraciton of bernese mountain dogs will develop malignant histiocytosis, but most breeds will never see this disease. So isn't it cruel to keep breeding a pure line that will show these problems?

But yeah, it is hard to find parallels between goldfish and dogs in terms of the head growths and handicapped swimming, but lots of toy breeds aren't exactly functioning animals or anything. Pugs and other dogs with wrinkly faces can get infections in the folds, just like a lionhead can get in his headgrowth.

That said, there is a difference between Wal-Mart goldfish and goldfish you buy from reputable breeders... kind of like a puppy mill vs. a good breeder. I've purchased fish from good importers and breeders (and paid the price!), but the fish are not only beautiful but seem to be generally healthier. Unfortunately, the deep body of the ranchu is what makes it beautiful AND prone to swim bladder disease most likely.

Dont be calling me and my buddy ugly k?

Nice oranda! I remember keeping pearlscales, redcaps, ryukins, shubunkins and plenty others before. I'm tempted to try them again.:D

People cross breed all kinds of stuff trying to get certain traits, Like a Mule for example, which turned out to be a good and functional thing. But to cross breed fish to get somthing ugly and deformed just to appeal to a small segment of the population, and make $, is both morally and ethically wrong.
