For things like Piranha, give it to someone where it is legal to have them.

But, say you are at a pet store, and see a nice looking bowfin. You buy it, and after a few months you realize it's actually a snakehead. If you were to report yourself to authorities that you owned this snakehead, and asked what to do with it, would you still get in trouble? Its not like you were trying to hide the fact you had it, and when you discovered what it was, you would be doing the right thing, right?

Or would they slap a fine on you for having it? Or jail you? Hell, would there be a way you could get a permit to keep it?

the fine is thousands of dollars, its not a small slap on the wrist. Its not worth risking it, and you are not being a very good friend if you give it away to someone else and let them get the fines. If you release it, I hope you get caught. So your option is either to keep it(and risk it) or to be responsible and fry it up. Most species that are illegal are also delicious

ignorance is no excuse in the eyes of the law, DONT report yourself, just humanely get rid of it

A alligator here in IL is illegal. And the fine is only $1000

that is a state ban, not a federal one. The federal fine is much more. Last time i checked, it was up to $10,000 with possible jail time, depending on offense.

I wouldn't have ever thought that. So if I was fishing in Florida and I caught a snakehead and I through it back in the water do you think I could get a fine like that just saying I'm not really trying to be a smart ass Or anything just wondering

the law states that if you catch a live snakehead, you must kill it. it is illegal to throw it back, but that is still at the descretion of the officer if they catch you. most likely you will be educated by the officer and not arrested, but there is still the possiblity of fines. The fine as I understand it is UP TO 10,000, im sure just throwing a caught fish back probably wont get you into too much trouble

Wow that's crazy I'd probley just take I home then if I'm going to get in trouble anyway JK
