This thread has long since gone past the "how as the coronavirus affected your personal life" stage. It's fast turning into something more befitting of my "global doom and gloom" thread I started a while back!

It's grim by the sounds of it pretty much everywhere.

Knowledge is power.

Links with bogus info and/or complete misinformation, not so much.
I have a brother who is an RN who ferrets out every piece of anti-vax misinformation he can find on his underground conspiracy networks. For those who choose to believe stuff contrary to prevailing consensus, they will find someone spouting off what they want to hear and believe. Of course, none of these pseudo-experts have a background in virology or epidemiology or infectious disease or anything close to the subject at hand, but hey, what does that matter? They are spouting what some people want to hear.

Yup, that certainly seems to be the case.

People have been buying snake oil forever, and I just don’t think that’s ever going to change.

Well I’ve been feeling OK so I decided to sign up for the vaccine, and I will be getting poked on Friday.

Because my wife got the Moderna and it didn’t kill her I’m going to get the same thing.

New Research Suggests Best Type Of Mask For Your Next Flight (forbes.com)

Quotes from link;

“In a paper published in the journal Physics of Fluids, the researchers conclude that high-efficiency masks, such as KN95s, offer substantially higher filtration efficiencies for exhaled minute aerosols (60% and 46% for R95 and KN95 masks, respectively) than more commonly used cloth (10%) and surgical masks (12%), making them the recommended choice for mitigating airborne disease transmission indoors.”

Hello; (My comments) so R95 came in at 60%. KN95 came in at 46%. Cloth at 10%. Surgical masks at 12%.

Hello; In the last few days a pfizer vaccine has been advertised to be fully approved by the FDA. I have been asking around to find out if this means the limited liability for the now newly approved shots is changed? Does the "full approval" mean we who take a pfizer shot (the renamed one) can now sue for damages if some problem crops up from the shot? Are the limited liability standards still in place for the fully approved shots?

On a different forum there is a member who is very pro vaccines and claims to be in the medical field. He/she tends to match closely with some in the medical fields who post on this site and are pro vaccine in terms of post content. His/her answer today was that the restricted liability will continue for this fully approved vaccine as it has since last January.

Does anyone actually know at this point?

Comirnaty and Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine | FDA

Hello; The answer to my question may be in the above link somewhere. I have not looked at ever every section. I did look into the sections that should have given the answer. It seems there is still an emergency use for the young ( age 12 to 16 I think) and for some needing a booster shot. I gather these uses are still under the emergency use status. It is not clear about the liability change, if any, for the fully approved shots.

I also gather the name change does not meant the injections are different. The previous shots and those under the new name (Comirnaty) appear to be the same stuff. I have no good speculation about the name change.

I am old and it looks like I may be encouraged to get a third shot. It would be of interest to know if the now fully approved shots will no longer have the limits on liability they have had in the past.

I think that your best bet would be to contact your doctor, and your attorney. Good luck.

Is this supposed to be newsworthy?

Obviously some designs of masks are better than others, but real world data that has been seen/experienced in care facilities across the land proves that even surgical masks can have a major effect on stopping the transmission of airborne droplets. As mentioned previously, not a single influenza outbreak last fall/winter/spring in any of the health care facilities that I work. First time in a decade, and the only thing that changed was the wearing of surgical masks.

Also, unless I missed it, in that article that you linked to there was no mention of the type/grade of the surgical masks that were used. BIG difference among surgical masks. In all of our buildings, and as far as I know ALL health care facilities across the land, we wear Level 3 surgical masks.

For example, according to ASTM International standards, there are 3 classifications :
  • Level 1 (low) - venous pressure splash.
  • Level 2 (moderate) - arterial pressure splash.
  • Level 3 (high) - high-velocity procedures, orthopedic surgery.

Clearly an N95 mask will offer superior filtration, as medical masks are looser in fit, and due to that they do not provide the same level of particulate filtration.
That doesn't equate to them not catching /stopping a large percentage of someone's cough, or sneeze. They are clearly making a huge difference in lowering transmission of airborne pathogens in areas where they are being properly worn.
