Well the turkey came out wonderful, in mom's old 1970's electric turkey roaster.

It was about the same work I normally do. I did the turkey, peeled spuds and yams, made the gravy, and opened various cans.
My wife made biscuits from scratch, and green beans, and the mashed potatoes. I made the yams with butter and maple syrup, plus peach schnapps. When you toss the schnapps on the boiled syrup, the alcohol fumes off rapidly.

Worst part is always scrubbing the giant roaster in the utility sink, and douching it repeatedly with boiling water to remove the grease. I've cleaned that thing 30 years, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. a couple years back, I disassembled the whole thing and everything was still primo, so I cleaned it to the bare molecules, and back in the closet until next year I think. For Christmas, I will avoid poultry.

I wished the family could be here, but my wife was paranoid, and I'm still feeling punky. Fortunately I was able to eat like a sybarite, when my gut had been dodgy enough to keep me on chicken soup.

We are currently over 30 days with no new cases or deaths so we have offiicialy "eradicated" the virus here which is good but im sceptical. We will be allowing some international arrivals in 5 days who will have to quarantine for 2 weeks on arrival but I think its got the potential to let the virus back in, they also are still finding what they call "fragments" of virus in the sewers so we will see how it goes.

For any tennis fans the upcoming Australian Open is causing headaches for the government as the tennis players say they wont come to play if they have to quarantine for 2 weeks and cant train while they do it. Personally i think the same rules should apply to everyone, even Federer and Nadal. Its not just the players but their entourages of coaches and staff we need to worry about too.

This part will be annoying for anyone still facing restrictions but the end of lockdown is a big adjustment to make. After pretty much 8 months of barely leaving the house its a shock to the system to be back on the road for work and driving around the state all day. My daughters activities such as dance lessons have all started up again and all our friends want to catch up. im trying to get ack into a gym routine too. Im not complaining but its very tiring and its a big shift in mindset from having nothing but free time to what seems like no free time. I didnt expect it to be so wearing on the old brain and body. With christmas rapidly approaching its going to get busier as everyone tries to fit 8 months of lost socialising into 4 weeks.

I guess for anyone currently in lockdown the Melbourne experience should be a positive example that if lockdowns are strict and long they do work. Obviously their are alot of economic and social costs but if the goal is to get rid of covid it shows it can be done however unpleasant.

We hit new records on Friday - 204,179 new cases

Here's something interesting. India came onto the COVID-19 scene fairly late. They came on like gang busters and in September they nearly caught up with the US and were only 800,000 cases behind the US. Since that time, the US rallied (if you can call it that, and if highest COVID-19 numbers is something to be proud of) and managed to get nearly 3.5 million cases ahead of India. At the start of this pandemic, there was talk about "flattening the curve", which India is doing. The US infections are doing the opposite and going up exponentially.

Total Cases: US 12,589,088; India 9,140,312

Recovered Cases: US 7,452,616; India 8,561,444

Active Cases: US 4,873,771; India 445,095

Total COVID-19 Deaths: US 262,701; India 133,773

My anti-mask, COVID-19 is a hoax friends attribute India's better numbers to "they do less testing".

Total Tests: US 180,672,356; India 131,733,134 No other countries come close to doing as many tests.

India has better numbers than the US. Less people are dying, and more are recovering faster (they have more recovered cases than the US)

I can't help but wonder if there is a malaria connection, or more specifically, a hydroxychloroquin connection. These countries have more than 50% of the malaria cases in the world: Nigeria, DRC, Uganda, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Niger and India. In these contries, less people die from COVID-19, and those who recover seem to do so much faster than those in the US.

Late to this thread. I think the reason you see the US having so many issues is that we lead the world with health issues that cause complications with COVID. Pretty sure we lead the world with high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. The US in general is very unhealthy from that perspective due to common occurrences of poor diets and lack of exercise.

I'm shocked South Africa didn't follow similar trends, my province has a 55% obesity rate in adults.

We're currently around 63% obesity rate in adults, and for the size of us we probably have one of the most shocking death rates from covid in the world, but I think there are too many other variables other than just obesity.

I think the whole obesity thing can be a bit misleading too. You think obesity and you imagine a huge person who can't move. According to government guidelines you can be classed as falling into the lower end of the obese spectrum, even if you put a few pounds on, and look completely normal!! If I were to go anywhere near 12 and a half stone for example (i'm 10st 10lb pretty much all the time), i'd be classed as being at the lower end of the obesity scale!! 12 and a half stone, obese for a 5ft 9" bloke? lol.

So if these government guidelines are used for the whole of a slightly podgy population, then no wonder the obesity % looks huge.

That's odd, here it's classified as having a BMI over 30. Our weight is overweight or obese, I don't know where obesity fits in the numbers. I can imagine your immune system isn't thanking you much if you're overweight. It probably also depends on how full hospitals are and so on, if they're overflowing I can imagine the death rate would spike dramatically.

I think the problem is there are too many people in complete denial that COVID-19 is a threat. One of my friends posted (on social media) a flyer encouraging people to gather in public places and sing Christmas carols loudly in "protest". I'm sick of hearing the argument equating church attendance with shopping in a store. For one thing, I would never just sit in a store for an hour and a half...I go when there aren't many shoppers, and I'm out of there as quickly as possible. I don't go anywhere in public and sit for 90 minutes. I have absolutely no problem with virtual church programs.

On another note, my little county is in a bad way. I have been keeping daily COVID-19 numbers since April 15. Last week, we joined the elite group of counties in the infamous "purple tier" category (widespread transmission). While the County had been giving daily updates, there has been no updates since 11/25. Our Health Department is completely overwhelmed with new cases and trying to do contact tracing. They are going to receive State help because they are not able to do it with so many cases to investigate. The head honcho has not put out any letters to the community since 11/24, and there has been no closings or requirements to stop indoor dining in restaurants, etc. In one of the last communications, it was mentioned that COVID-19 was spreading with families/friends gathering inside. And meanwhile, there is a no mask chiropractor doing adjustments, and his waiting room has a majority of people not wearing masks. :( :( :( On 10/27 we had a total of 180 cases. On 11/29, 339 cases (I found the number on a worldwide site) Things aren't looking too good here.

We too are in the purple category; but fortunately for us, most of the cases are coming from the other end of a county which is about the size of Connecticut.

Otherwise there’s not a lot of news locally about what’s going on.
