just got off the phone with tech at seachem ( prime)

how long does it take to neutralize the free chlorine ??

almost instantaneous when the chlorinated water comes in contact with the active components of prime. The better the stirring or mixing the faster all the chlorine ions will be bound up.
And since we already established that chlorine contact is bad for fish. This amount of time that it takes in effect... Could cause harm right ?

Looks to me that there is a lot of people doing the dose/fill directly method without any signs of problems for a very long period of time. If it is bad for the fish you should see it pretty soon.

I don't buy the long term effects reason because you can't prove it. If you see something happening to your fish a long time later it could have been almost anything from high nitrites, high nitrate, high this, high that, etc. Don't tell me you can tell it is from long term once a week 5 minute exposure to diluted chlorine/chloramine.

For those who claim they saw instant death after using dose/fill directly method. Well was that your first time doing that? How about the previous times? What happened? Some people do water changes because of bad water conditions already present and claim it was the chlorine that killed their fish after the water change.

Look, the dose/fill directly method may or may not be harmful to your fish. If you believe it is instantly harmful to your fish and have seen your fish die every time you use this method then don't use this method. But if you believe it is only harmful in the long run then you are better off feeding your fish a little less, removing a few fish, and add an extra filter or two to reduce fish waste which can cause immediate damage to your fish rather than worrying about what chorine/chloramine can do to your fish in the long run.

If you don't mind extra work then do what you gotta do.

Id like to see someone dosing a 300gal tank prior to fill up vs a 20gal, and what the outcome of that would be. 20gal can be dosed and filled up in 15 seconds. A 300gallon not so much, well unless you use a fire hydrant.

Some people still don't believe smoking causes lung cancer for a similar reason.

I had that happen; so I'm a believer in the harm caused by in-tank mixing. I had an established 75G tank of small fish (e.g., rams, neons, guppies, swordtails, etc.). I was performing weekly water changes with a 5G bucket. I premixed the Prime in the bucket before dumping it in the tank. No fish loss after WCs for the year I did that. I then got a Python and during my first WC I added enough Prime for the whole tank and after the 25% change I lost a ram and a number of neons. The next water change I tried adding Prime while I was filling up the tank. Lost more fish. I also had another tank with African Cichlids that I was using the same procedure. I didn't loose any of them but I noticed that they shook their heads and flashed on the gravel during and ~ an hour after the change.

I then switched back to pre-mixing the Prime; this time using two 35G trash cans and a pump. No fish loss since, and I have not seen any of the Cichlids react to WCs; even after moving up to 50%.

i do this every week with a 280. drain 20% add 30 ml prime refill with a hose...the slower you fill the more time there is to bind the chlorine

So what about 50-70% on a 350-450gal. You say slower is better so then there wouldn't be any kind of problem then.

It takes 11 minutes to fill 1 inch on my 300 with my water pressure. Every inch is 10g. so, to do a 120g change it takes 120 minutes, or 1 1/2hrs. With this logic my fish should be fine.

if you fill at a reasonable rate it it gives the city water and prime more time to come into contact :)
