I've been keeping fish since around 1980, but I was out for maybe 15 years or so starting in 1990. My fishkeeping IQ is maybe 4-5, I can keep the common species, I've bred some of the commoner fish, but I've never dipped into marine or kept any of the more advanced FW stuff like discus or rays (yet).
i haven't kept them either... i would love to try them now... but now i don't have the room... if only i knew i what i know now... i would have dove into some challenging money makers..:D:D

I have been keeping fish since 1991 when a coworker showed me his piranha tank and I have been hooked ever since.I also have a small library of aquarium books that I have collected over the years and I read a lot of them pretty often.I try to learn new things about our hobby everyday, thats one of the reasons why I spend so much time on MFK.

I can't remember not having fish, i'm 26 now and must have had them for about 24 of those years. There was always a tiny cold water tank with goldfish in in mine and my brothers room when we were young, moved onto ponds and then koi while i was at school. Dug out one of the old small tanks after i finished school and started working away and got some small goldfish again (as well as still having a 5,000gal koi pond at my folks place) then moved onto tropical fish when i saw how large some of them could get and been on those for the last 9 years now. Only really started learning anything useful (and making my wallet much lighter) since finding mfk last year and getting an unhealthy addiction for large catfish, but still not got my fish IQ above 0! my fish teach me something new everyday.
that is so true... i know we MFK'rs teach each other... so much.. but because we are into sharing our hobby i think we really pay more attention to what our fish are teaching us too... i have learned all their little signs.. their eyes will show me anger, happiness and fright etc.. their body language shows me their health... their interaction with the other fish shows me their mood.. all little signs of fish language i have picked up from watching them...who would have quessed i would learn fish body language.. but it is like an instinct now... i can tell almost what it is going on in their life.. like fine tuning.. so yes fish teach us...

For about 10 years now ( ill be 20 next month ) , but for the last 3 - 4 years i have been more intreasted in Fish and have started to do alot more research on Fish and started to keep more types of Fish mainly Tropical Fish , like the Silver Awo' , many diffrent Cichlids and Catfish . Before i mainly kept Goldfish and Koi ( still do ) but i have been more focused on expanding my collection of Tropical Fish .

And now just got 3 Turtles ( 1 Yellow Bellied Slider and 2 Map Turtles ) .

Always learning new thinks about Fish and have only just started to reasearching/ learning about Turtles i will most likely never stop learning and hopfully never stop keep Fish and basicly never stop keeping animals .

Probably longer but I can say 35 years for sure. Most likely had goldfish in a bowl before that, but around 1973-74 is the first tank I definitly remember.
I seem to be able to help with peoples questions sometimes, and I enjoy helping folks get started. But I wouldnt consider myself an expert.
