How much electricity is my tank using?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
^ word. thanks lupin

i think i figured it out,
-cut back on the lighting
-summer is cheaper to run a tank because less need for the heater.
-get the electricity bill from the parents
-but it probably costs less than 10$ a month

man i should have just googled it....i thought it would be easier asking on this forum

Thanks to everyone who answered the question
ill throw in a pic of my tank just for the heck of it =P

hey everyone

Due to the crap economy, I might take down 1 of my 2 tanks so I can save my parents some money.

I was wondering if anyone can give me an estimate as to how much it costs to run a 75 gallon tank with one XP3, 250 watt stealth heater, and 4 hours of lighting a day per month.

I live in SoCal by the way.

Thanks

The heater will take the most energy by far. If your indoor temps are between 70 and 80, you don't need a heater. The XP3 doesn't require a ton of power. My wife and I keep our apartment at between 73 and 79 year round, which precludes the necessity for a heater. Even letting the tank temp drop to 70 during the coldest days of the winter isn't necessarily a bad thing. Natural fish habitats have mild temperature fluctuations throughout the year, and it'll probably give you healthier, hardier fish with some minor fluctuations in their environment.

Keep your tanks. Kill the heater!

Our electricity cost is less than $5/month for our 4 tanks tank without heaters, keeping the apartment at about 77.

Yup, heaters are what causes the most costs. If you can, drop your temps down a couple degrees or get rid of them all together. The rest of the stuff's energy can be saved by changing one incadescent light bulb to flourescent. Come to think of it, you could just change all your light bulbs over and then you would be saving money as opposed to taking down a tank.

Nice tank dude! What you got in there? They're not those exodons are they?

Silly assumptions make you look stupid.

They're exodons.

The tank looks really nice.

An XP3 uses 19 watts, BTW.

dude give me a break he's in college and he can't even make $50 a month? alot of ppl aren't as lucky as you and the guys you graduated with who had their parents pay for their tuition.

dude who are you? are you mad cuz daddy didnt pay for college? get over it, he has a good GPA and his parents are paying for it.... SO WHAT. His question was regarding reducing costs of his fish tanks. If he wanted to know if he should get a job or not im sure he'll ask you.
