How much experience and knowledge do you have in fish keeping

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have 8 years in the hobby and work at a lfs, so It depends on what,I did africans for 3-4 years and a community for 2 years and have been keping hyrids for almost 4 years now, just got into planted tanks and right now thats were im lacking the most, but I would say im fairlly knowledgable with the flower horns and hybrids and even fresh water in general,I only had a salt set up for a year cause I moved out of momy and daddys and didnt feel like seting up all my tanks, but I help keep up all the salt tanks at the store, so im pretty much an all around fish geek lol

I’m 35 been keeping fish on and off since I was 8 about 10 years ago my father who was a great Aquarist (he used to show fish and had bred most Tetras you see in the shops) started going blind through glaucoma so to help him out I used to take him to his fish club and help out in his fish room. Over the years his tanks got less and mine got more until he finally gave up and passed on his tanks books some of his knowledge. (The wife loved it hens no garage just a fish room) It was at the start of his illness I started collecting snakeheads and catfish much to his shock I am very fortunate that one of my best friends owns a LFS so had a reedy supply of fish and equipment. Over the years I have grown on and sold 100’s of fish. I would say I am no expert but I have owned a lot of large and odd fish and have an extensive Library so if I don’t know it I can normally fined it. So I would say my real passion are the catfish and snakeheads but then again as my Dad said to his mated at the fish club “He aint interested in it unless its got teeth or wants to eat what’s with it”.

Lets see I ve been keeping fish for about 2 years... I am an African hoarder... but due to recent citations I ve had to downgrade - but hoping to upgrade soon =) Africans are my area of intrest and I dont know much about them - but there are so many (prob not even discovered yet) that its a never ending learning process. I enjoy breeding some of my africans when given the chance and what nots. I am also in the process of having and learning about planted tanks - I have a 15 gal one in the works right now. My next project is to learn about sa/ca cichlids.

Nice to meet you Ash.. and we can learn about africans together..like you said it never ends with the amount of different species there are.

I have kept fish for 20 years. About the first 10 years of that with little experiance, just keeping common cichlids and community tanks. But the majority of last ten years have been with cichlids, but mainly Crenicichla species.

Ive had tanks since i was like 5 years old but i dont even really count them as tanks... Raphael cats, and breeding mollies... i quit the hobby for a good 10 years, and would just let my uncle(inspiration) have the setups, so i wouldnt have to maintain them, i could just watch... then when he moved out he gave me his on the wall 55G aquarium, thats when i got interested again, and i decided to make the most aggressive tank i could with a 55... I had a JAG and a JEwel, Aro, blue lobsters... well needless to say, I got sick of seeing my fish kick the crap out of eahc other and rip all their fins off... i dont kno why people would spend thousands on setups that all the fish look like crap... pirahnas main example.. Now i am really becoming more and more inept with the SW setups.. im like a sponge right now, trying to take in as much info as i can...But i say i have MOST central american Cichlids down, and can care for em all Im setting up a 55G reef/lionfish tank as of right now...so my collection is as follows

90G -community (Ray/Blue Dempsey/hopefully female 2 JD's/Clown Pleco / Firemouth/Glass knife/CLown Knife(which i really want to exchange for another Glass)
55G - Breeder Convict tank with 3 male and 3 female, producing like rabbits...
55G - in process of getting all the right parts for success/ will be a reef/lionfish!
20G - For baby convicts to grow up a bit before i feed them to the CK
10G - Evil JEwel Cichlid that almost killed my EBJD way back when.. Never will get any more then 10 gallons for a punishment for his violence, but still looks Brilliantly red!
10G - Which im fixing up to give to my Gf for Xmas for her Dorm room
5G - for guppies

This is all in my room at my house.. not bad for a college kid, but i got a long way to go... for me to fulfill my addiction
Not bad for a college kid is right.. in fact it is downright remarkable.. and keeps you really busy.. do you still have room for your bed?

That is a great history especially that it was a pass down from your Dad.. And so cool that you realize how those monster fish are your passion, good thing we have MFK!
