Good to know. Can you live feed them? I kind of want to get a guppies tank and breed them to feed to the convict.

Try and give the goldfish back.

A single convict should be okay. Tell your parents that you are getting expert advice from people online

Rather don't. There's no benefit and it can cause issues really

I'm 15 and running 4 tanks totalling 100 gallons in my room. If you can listen to anyone forums like this are the way to go, these people helped me get started in this awesome hobby. They know what they're talking about

If they won't take them what should I do? my parents see fish as something cheap and replaceable not a animal with feelings so they won't do their research :( .

Hmm, maybe tell them that you asked your biology teacher at school about it? I'm guessing you are in middle school or highschool and they have a teacher for that haha. They may respect a teacher's opinion on it? Worth a shot if you are doing well in that class. (Ps... good grades may get some brownie points towards your tank addiction lol.)

Also if you can replace the goldfish perhaps you should get them a nice looking betta and the guppies? Much easier to care for and they would probably be able to take some neglect in the 20 gallon. I think a small female convict would be ok in a tank that small but depending on temperament they would probably get bored. I know the first time I had to separate my male into my 29 gallon he sulked until I put his mate back in with him. 20 is the bare minimum for those fish.

Also yes, you can live feed convicts but don't make it the only part of the diet. Pellets are a much better choice. If you have to live feed, you can feed them the usual household annoying bugs like houseflies too as long as there's no pesticides around, that's what they eat in the wild more than other fish. Frozen bloodworms are also good.

If you wanted 2 I would go with 2 females. A male and female will make wayyyy too many fry unless you know someone who can use them as feeders or you have no lfs nearby that sells them.

Most females stay under 4" as well. Males can get 6".

I meant 2 females. And how common are acaras in stores like petsmart or petco?
