African Tiger Fish
There are five distinct species of Tiger fish found in Africa's mighty rivers. Possibly more species could be found with ongoing research throughout African rivers and Lakes. Tiger fish belong to the "Characidae" family that are found from the Nile in North Africa down to Jozini Dam in South Africa.
There is no equivalent fish species in the rest of the world, not so much because of its shape but because of its impressive jaws and the sheer brutality of its strike. In sheer power and speed it outclasses all other African freshwater fish. It is exclusively carnivorous and it is undoubtedly the King of the African Sport Fish on the continent. The teeth are well exposed, set at the edge of the jaws and act like two knife blades slicing in opposite directions and produce a clean cut as the jaws close, teeth perfectly interlocked.
The 5 species are:
hydrocynus goliath
Distribution: Congo basin and Lake Tanganyika. The largest species, known to grow in Excess of 50kg.
hydrocynus vittatus
Distribution: Congo, Niger, White Nile and Zambezi River and in big Southern African lakes, Lake Kariba, Cahorra Bassa and Jozini Dam in South Africa. The second largest species
hydrocynus tanzaniae
Distribution: Ruvu, Mnyera, Rufigi, Ruhudji and Ruaha rivers in Tanzania.
hydrocynus brevis
Distribution: Nile, Niger, Senegal and Gambia.
hydrocynus forskahlii
Distribution: Nile to West Africa, Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Cameroon, Congo, Ghana, Liberia, Benue, Gambia, Chad, Sierra Leone, Benin..
