hystrix breathing out of 1 lung??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my ph is about 7.8-8
my nitrite is 0
my ammonia is 0
nitrates is 30-35ppm

just got home and is not only breathing out of one side again, and as you can see from the picture, his left eye is lower than his right. the left side is the side not raising when breathing.

with these results should i treat?

ps, i was trying to feed some marine -a- pellets made by hikari. that is what is around him.

hmm,..... you got me stumped.... i think him and Gr8's ray just like to go against the norm to cause us to think sometimes

dude get those pellets out of there.... the last thing he is gonna do at this point is eat pellets

add some live blackworms and toss in some binox by jungle labs...... dont over do the meds... keep the water clean and a small amount of black worms in the tank and turn the lights off.... leave him alone for a while

I was not expecting the hystrix to eat the pellets!!!....yet.... i am not an idiot if he is not eating worms he is surely not going to eat pellets., i have a 5" ray in the tank too, trying to break him and get him on pellets. THe pellets were only in the tank for a few min.
i am trying to get some blk worms.

Get them from California blackworms just google the name, I go thru 15 lbs a week and have never seen any parasites or had any problems. Newborns of these size should always be fed blackworms for first month or so until there nice and fat then you can start to get them on other foods. I would also assume some type of bacterial infection get a product called binox it works great and salt is always a help no matter what.

i will try to purchase the binox... The reason i did not even mess with blk worms in the beginning is that this ray was already pretty fat, and seemed to take earthworms right off the bat. plus i have always thought why risk parasites if they will eat earthworms.

well the good news is he is breathing out of both sides again and his eye does not look so droopy. I just tried cut up worms (VERY VERY small) and cut shrimp (very small too)which he ate both when i first got him.

He did for sure eat 1, 1/4" pc of worm, i watched for a few minutes to make sure he swallowed it...

Yea...I lost one out of 2 hystrix out of this last bunch in less than 24 hours. The other one seems to have slowed eating as well, though she did eat shortly after acclimation. They are very small and I'm thinking/hoping they just need more time. Keep us posted as I am going through some similar instances, minus the eye slumping and one side breathing.

mine is ups and down, one time when i look at him he looks fine.. Eating etc... The next time i go in there he is acting funny. So who knows.
