I do NOT fool around with filtration

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a lot of fish. Big fish. My water would be destroyed in hours if I do any less. What I have is actually a bare min. I do a 75% WC once every week. Also when I hook up my drip system I actually will bypass the water change since the drip system will automatically do it for me. When I link the two systems together and run my hydrophonic system on the two tanks I will only need to clean the turds out and top it off. Maybe change the water once a month max. The plants will take care of the rest. I will added vitamins for the plants. To lengthen the time to change water. At the only real need for a WC after that is to get more minerals into the system.

My fish in the tank pop out turds the size of your thumb. This tank will be upgraded to a 10'x10'x3' once I move. That system will also be fully planted and with all that room for filtration I will still have about 14x turnover on it.

The stock for this 180gal is

1x 23"+ tropical gar
1x 21"+ tropical gar
1x 20" Florida gar
2x 20" longnose gar
1x 18"+ Florida gar
1x 18"+ shortnose gar
1x 16" Florida gar
1x 16" Cuban gar
2x 14" Florida gar
2x 14" longnose gar
1x 15" bowfin

Growing out I have
1x 14" longnose
1x 12" gator gar
1x 6"+ Niger catfish
1x 5" mala wolf fish

Will be growing out soon
5x black aro
5x silver aro

Once I have my 10x10x3 built they all will be combined. Then I will grow out some more catfish, gars and possibly rays for that big tank.

I am most likely in the next month or so getting a 6'x3'x2' for these fish to hold up in a bit longer.

This bioload justifies extra filtration. ;)

Well, Amand... If there is a power failure, possibly for a few hours, there would be concern for those fishes that cannot take in air directly (I guess your niger catfish and arowanas)...

I am going to think this was directed at me. The big tank will be fully planted. The plants will give off o2. Arowanas can breath some air. Catfish also can survive lower o2 levels for some time. Once the big tank is up and going it would take some time to drain that kind volume of o2. I will have a back up pump like I have now that runs on batteries. Just a simple air pump on a sponge filter/air stone. Cheap and worth it. I also have power inverters and deep cycle batteries. Those are for short term uses. If there is a long term outrage I have a generator.

^^^^ After seeing that kind of set up and filtration system... why to worry about an energy failure?. @Abuse can easily get a power generator or even invest in a solar cell system and that's it, I have the feeling money isn't really an issue for some of you guys.

Money being an issue isn't that big of a deal. If you buy one here one there. Add to you filtration as you go. Then you can build it up as your fish grow. Don't count out sponges. I have 14 sponges running 13 tanks. I have an extra one to rotate out for cleaning. 12 of these tanks/sponges are run off one up. The pump is something like 62watts. I could possibly run another 6 tanks off it. The pump was $70. I have invested in LEDs for my tanks with the exception of the newest 12. Most of my LEDs use .06watts each. My electric bill is only $30 more with all my tanks. Most filters are energy efficient you burn more on electric with lights. Metal halides, 4-8 tube florescent fixtures they all burn 32-250 watts a bulb. That's were your money goes. If costs are a concern, with me it is, spend the money and don't cheap out.

I have 3x 21" marine land hidden LEDs Petco special $45 each on my fully planted 125. Then one of the same lights on my 40breeder below. My 180gal next to it has beam works 48" single bright LEDs. So for that whole wall to be light up I am using less electricity then if you left you hall light on all day. All my lights in my house have been switched to the florescent coiled lights. That run 14watts. As they burn out I am replacing them with the new led lights that fit in a standard light socket. There are ways to cut costs and the expensive way. You can cut lighting cost and add filtration to end up right were your at now with bills if not lower.

I go hard...

I had a setup like this on my 265

Had 5 Emperor 400s and 2 Marineland 360s, even that wasn't enough for my tank.

Not to jump but I have a 75 with 5 small ryukins ( I will upgrade and am in progress ) And they poop a lot. I have 2 emperor 400s and 2 hydro pond sponge filters with bare bottom
