WOW,Your a smart one,so by your rules I should be able to keep an elephant in my 50'x50' backyard in the middle of the city with no problem right

You're about 7' on each side bigger than the minimum size requirements set by the government :WHOA: I'm serious here's the link http://www.aza.org/AboutAZA/BrdAppPolicies/Documents/ElephantStandards.pdf
"1.4.2. Outdoor yards must have at least 1,800 sq. ft (167.2 sq. m) for a single adult
individual and an additional 900 sq. ft (83.6 sq. m) must be added for each
additional animal (AZA 1997). If this space is the only location for exercise, then it
is recommended that the space per elephant should be even greater."

So uh what type of stocking rules for fish would the government set up anyhow?...As long as it's alive it's okay??

if the government gets involved then they will either not do enough or do to much... hence the elephant cage not enough.. but if you few guys had it your way then noone would be able to keep an animal.. wild animals have huge areas to run. so you guys are saying they need a huge area to live. that means noone can keep an dog or cat unless you have a 300 acre farm.. addational cat or dog add 100 acres..no aquarium is big enough for about 90% of the fish they sell.. some ppl do overstock their tanks some dont but the way i look at it is if the water is good and the fish can swim around and it looks like it is healthy than leave it alone before you make it worse.. if you want to bring in the rules.. make the LFS's tell ppl what they are getting into with the fish that the are buying and not their version.(like wal-marts 12"pacu) make a standard info. maybe send all LFS's a card for every fish they carry and they have to tell the customer that info.. but if the government goes by you few that say that fish need big areas then the government is only going to let ppl with 300g or bigger have a small school of guppys or something..

yes i do agree there are ppl that dont know what they are doing and shouldnt keep fish but we have all been there before. noone is born with fishkeeping skills.. i admit i made some mistakes and learned from them.. but only lost like 7 fish since i started the hobby a year ago.. everybody has their own view on how many fish you can keep in a tank. some ppl say i have too many some say im fine and some even say i can add more fish.. so who is right.. the answer is me. its my fish my tanks my money. i dont have much money so i dont want my fish to die. so i dont think my tank is crowded or unhealthy..

Wow. I cant believe some of what I'm reading.People argueing to make fishkeeping more expensive?Think about it Banning certain fish would do one thing, create jobs for criminals.I still laugh 15 years later about the girl who was arguing with me for gun contol laws, while she was holding a joint! Bans on ANYTHING only stops responsible lawabiding people.Piranha are illegal in NY,anyone here honestly believe no new yorkers have any?
Permits? If all you have to do is fill out a form its not going to stop any of the problems you are talking about. And what kind of enforcement could there be?Make people who purchase a fishtank subject to inspections by the DEC?You think the police would have cycled thousand gallon tanks to put seized fish in or would they stick it in a bag and send it to the evidence room?Would that improve the fishes lot in life?
Imho, the best thing responsible fishkeepers can do is try to educate anyone starting in the hobby, who will listen, about doing it right.Tank space, compatibility ,cycling all issues that if new fishkeepers knew more about, less fish would end up as fertilizer.

Miles, I would shake your hand if I could.

It is really sad to see an intellectual argument being brought up, question and rationally and respectfully discussed as little imbeciles pop up and devalue the whole thing. If you have only one line response that contains sh*t and f*ck, keep it to yourself and do not make yourself look like an even bigger idiot. It would be really nice to see the administrators and moderators step in and perhaps remove some of this bs and perhaps let people know to talk to others with some bit of respect.

I agree. The goverment would just use permits to add to the taxes we already pay. At frist you could get permits to build a house by just filloing out forms now you can spend lots of cash to get those permits. The goverment is always looking to add more taxes.
