I hate New LIFe Spectrum(NLS) FIsh food

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its cool, just bother me, that some members seem to think they're really know about the hobby, then rag on people less experienced when we all should treat each other with respect.

but, RD does bring up a good point. if the fish food that's giving you problems is indeed a chinese one, (not to rag on chinese since i'm chinese), I would actually forget about contacting them at all since chinese companies don't have a good reputation for customer service as well as product reliability (remember the tainted pet food and toothpaste that killed some pets over here in the states?)

I would switch to Hikari food sticks actually if I were you for feeding of your stock.

I mentioned that I feed all of my tanks NLS- it started with me buying the cichlid a formula for my flowerhorn, and then I was given 3 unopened containers of it.. that is what I feed it. It is not bad food, but given the option, I would feed Kens over NLS anyday.

Let's have him try some new foods and see what happens shall we?

Like Ken's "premium" Cichlid formula?

INGREDIENTS: WHEAT, FISH MEAL, SOYBEAN MEAL, BLOOD PORK MEAL, STABILIZED FISH OIL, CAPSANTHIN, SPIRULINA, XANTHOPHYLL, KRILL MEAL, DI CALCIUM PHOSPHATE, VITAMIN A ACETATE, D-ACTIVATED ANIMAL-STEROL (D-3), VITAMIN B12 SUPPLEMENT, RIBOFLAVIN SUPPLEMENT, NIACIN, FOLIC ACID, CALCIUM PANTOTHHENATE, PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE, THIAMINE, BIOTIN, DL ALPHATOCOPHEROL (E), L-ASCORBYL-2-POLYPHOSPHATE (C), COLOR ENHANCERS WITH RED, YELLOW, AND BLUE/GREEN PIGMENTS.

Mmmmmm, wheat, mystery fish meal, pork blood, and artificial colors.

I'm getting hungry myself just reading these ingredients!

Perhaps you should go back & re-read my initial comments in this discussion, Mshill.

If your tank has a horrible rotten fish smell then I would suggest that you take a closer look at your bio load, your water change schedule, and your DIY bio filtration.

I am simply attempting to point out that your set up is where most the problem lays, not in the food that you are feeding. This would be the same advice that I would give regardless of the brand/formula or type of food that you are using.

Just a few short weeks ago you stated that your water tested positive for nitrites, which tells me that your set up has not fully matured. To add to that problem you have been cleaning some of your filter media in tap water, which of course destroys most if not all of the bio bacteria on that media. This too may be affecting your overall bio filtration. If the bio bacteria isn't functioning at full capacity, or isn't sufficient for the bio load in your set up, then organics will build up & will begin to stink, especially in an open rubbermaid stock tank that's sitting on the floor in your home.
The reality is that over time that entire room will begin to smell like ass, no matter what food that you feed.

The solution, build a more efficient filtration system, clean it more often, perform water changes twice weekly, cut back on the bio load, or move the pond outside.

Yet instead of taking some responsibility for what is going on in your set up you want to blame the food? Okay, so feed something else.

How in the hell does that equate to me spewing NLS preacher crap, or being a jerk, or a troll? What planet do you live on?

IMO I have offered the OP more CONSTRUCTIVE criticism than most people that have posted.

I'm also clearly not pushing anything down anyone's throat, and quite frankly I've suggested I believe three times now that if he's not happy with NLS, he should switch foods!

I also recommended that he run carbon in his system, MONTHS ago when he was complaining about odor issues. Had you actually taken the time to read some of his past threads you would have known that.

This isn't a food debate, and I don't care what you feed, or what the OP feeds.

I have also never once stated that it isn't possible for a food manufacturer to have a bad batch of food.

I am saying is that in this instance, it is not a case of a "bad batch", as there haven't been any "bad batches" of food that have been circulated since Pablo began making his own food a couple yrs back. Not so much as a single container. New Life ships world-wide, tons & tons of food to all points on the globe, and IF there were any "bad batches" out there, you would be hearing more than a couple of random comments on MFK about a Fahaka farting, or some kid with a rubbermaid pond & DIY sump complaining about odors.

This would have caused a MAJOR sheet storm, as it would with any pet food manufacturer! Do you have any idea how much of a fiasco a bad batch of food would result in? Obviously not. We are talking recalls of major proportions, which would have involved my company directly.

And this is not just one batch we are talking about here with the OP, but two batches, of two completely different formulas, as the OP has complained about the same thing from both his 10mm pellets, as well as his 3mm pellets. So no, it is NOT possible that he has a bad batch, or batches. End of story.

I'm old enough to remember when feeding commercial dried ant eggs was considered "good stuff", and for the past 40 yrs or more the major gripe about pet foods (fish, dog, cat, etc) was the massive amounts of cheap grain/starch fillers that were used by manufacturers. That complaint is still heard today from one forum to the next, yet when a manufacturer that actually does know what he's doing, and actually is willing to put his money where his mouth is comes along, and uses only the bare minimum of starch/grain (as a binding agent) which ultimately equates to MORE of the "good stuff", people are now going to complain about the food being more potent, and having a stronger smell?

Using less starch, and more marine protein & lipids, means that the food is going to smell stronger, and may even cause a bit more powder residue at times as less binders are being used. It also means that this same potent food is going to be much higher in digestibility, which means that one can feed a lot less compared to other foods.
For most hobbyists this is good news!

For those that consider it a negative, there are plenty of foods out there that have wheat, soybean meal, and corn as the main ingredients.

Cheers!

You guys don't really get it... RD knows as much as much about NLS as anyone at NLS besides maybe the owner Pablo.

If you're unhappy with the food, just contact NLS and get your refund, and switch to something else (that's not as good ;)).

The owner of NLS is hands on when the food is made, and feeds it to his own fish so if there was a "bad batch", he'd not only be the first to know, it would have never left his loading docks. They won't be comping you anything. ......

The fact that the 5lb bucket of NLS Thera +A that I recently purchased causes a brown surface film constitute a bad batch?

No.

And neither do a few broken pellets just in case someone asks that next.

As clock suggested, anyone not happy with the food can ship it back to New Life & they will refund your money.

What was that all about? lol

New Life is located in the USA, and has had a spotless record for close to 20 yrs. Some of the most prestigious public aquariums in North America feed New Life, including Charles Delbeek M.Sc., senior biologist at the Steinhart Aquarium in San Francisco. Joe Yaiullo, one of the pioneers of reef keeping in the USA, and the curator/co-founder of Atlantis Marine World in NY has been feeding NLS (daily) in his reef tanks for the past 10 years. His 20,000 gallon reef set up is the largest in North America, and 4th largest in the world. ORA feeds NLS in their hatchery to their captive bred marine fish, including their mandarins.

You don't rise to that kind of a level in the aquatics industry from a lack of product reliability.

As far as customer service, New Life is one of the only manufacturers that I'm aware of that actually offers a money back guarantee. Pablo has gone so far to have once even refunded someone that felt his food caused a snail outbreak in their tank. lol Several months back I exchanged a bucket for someone that bought the wrong size of pellet for their fish. That was hardly a manufacturing issue, but I did it & ate the cost of the bucket, and the shipping one way.

My previous comments were directed at "comping" food for anyone that doesn't like the smell. If you aren't happy with the product, why would you want more?

I mean there are limits here, if you decide that after feeding close to an entire bucket of food that you supposedly aren't happy with, they may question why you waited several months, and fed most of the bucket, before you asked for a refund. :)

I also have grown to dislike NLS pellets, for a few reasons, 1. they stink something awful. I have to hold my breath when I open the container and 2. It's difficult to tell what the best size pellet to get, they are expensive to buy just to test the right sizes. I got one of the smaller pellets and found they are still too big and hard for my fish to get in their mouth, takes long time to soften too. Lastly, they are expensive, paying more for a name doesn't necessarily mean it's good. The hype about fish going nuts over NLS or any other food is skiddish at best. Fish go ape-wild over any fish food you throw at them, this is just the way they are, always hungry. My fish go crazy over ordinarly inexpensive fish flakes, they love cheap brine shrimp too. Then there's the debate on Fish Nutrition, NLS sells this bit really well, thing is, fish can be really happy and healthy on nothing but fish flakes and nobody, not even the experts can prove otherwise. I think the main point is to allow everyone to choose what works for them but not to cram the brand hype down people's throat. Let the fish decide.
