I lost my Norbert (30" fire eel)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Me and "smokey" my 3 foot fire eel are very sad to hear of such news.I would be crushed if that happened to me.They are a fish that really form a bond with there owner and that makes it as hard as loosing a relative.Again very sorry for your loss.

Oh, Loves severums. About a little funeral for him... He is in my freezer at the condo we are moving out of. I was thinking about burying him in the yard at our new house under a rose bush or something. I'm not sure.

I like that. :) his spirit will feel at ease.

that sucks...it has been a bad spring all around this year...

Well, it hasn't been all bad. My rtcxtsn (one of my top 5 favorites) started eating again after almost 3 months! I had pretty much written him off, until he took a piece of shrimp from my hand. I was literally yelling and jumping I was so happy! So, bit of a roller coaster these last few weeks.

I'm so sorry for your loss, Jen!

Thanks John. I'm sure you've heard me rattle on about my boy.

I bet you those roses will bloom beautifully and remind you of him everytime they blossom. :hearts:

I was hoping to find one of those roses with the petals that are yellow on the outside and red on the inside. I think the colors would be very fitting.

Thank you for the sympathy. You were are one of the few people I know of with a large eel (you probably have the largest), so you've really gotten to see the personality these guys get as they get older. If you don't already, figure out a way to latch your lids on. I was in total shock at the amount of weight he lifted. Losing him that way sucked.

Sorry for your loss,he sounds amazing.

Thank you, and he was fantastic. They require time and eat expensive food, but, if you can do it, they're so worth it.

Hey would a 30" fire eel be ok in a 150 gallon? 4' 2' 30"

No. I have (had) my guys in a 180 (6'x2'x2'). They're okay, but I was looking forward to upgrading them. I was going to be put the three of them into my 600 gallon (8'x4'x30"), which is more than you have to have for these guys. I would say you need an 7'x2.5'x2' minimum for these active guys, but, as always, a bigger tank would be better.

Sorry for your loss. How old was he?
Since I got him at 18", I don't know for sure. I would suspect that he was about 2.5 years old when I got him knowing the size of his head at the time. I've raised to two babies as well, and his head was about the size of theirs now at a little over 2 years old. My two other fire eels are 26" or so, but, as Norbert had been starved, he was stunted. So, I think he was about 4.5 years old. My two younger ones are going to hit 30"probably by the end of August at about 2.5 years old.

I am so sorry for your loss :( He couldn't of asked for a better caretaker.

Thank you. I keep having to reminding myself that I really did everything I could to keep him happy and healthy, and he was worth it all and more. Now, I know that lids will have to be clamped/latched on....Crappy way to find out. I know his life was seriously improved when he came home with me, but I really wanted to have him another 10 years or more, as they are fairly long lived fish.

Everyone: Thank you for all your sympathy. It's been very hard losing him, and most of my non-fish friends just don't understand.

That really sucks to hear... i still remember when i got my fire eel, you were one of the first people to help me out and give me some solid advice... so to hear you lost your main guy really cannot be put into words... R.I.P Norbert...

awww man.. sorry for your lost.. a 30" fire eel must have taken awhile to grow out.. :(
