I need help for this Idea for Water Changing.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you get a pond pump and hook it up to your python you can drain two tanks at once or drain one tank twice as fast. Putting aquarium water into the outside environment (ie. Out a window) rather than down a drain is illegal in most states. I'm not sure where you are located, but here it is a $10,000 fine. I actually know some one who was busted for doing it. You may think oh, they will never drive by my house and see it, but all it takes is one neighbor concerned with what you are "dumping" to call authorities on you. Just sayin....

I believe that is the grey water law thing right? Yes.. I have heard it is illegal.. but i dont have any ponds or bodies of water anywhere near my area... As i am in the farthest back in a large development. Not to 2/3 of my property is gated anways... Currently i only have a 55.. so the amount of water I dump is approximately 3-4 buckets anways... But when that new 275 gallon comes in it will be 5 times the amount.. so i will find an alternative.. possibly just hooking it up to s sump and a sprinkler. But thank you For this information. it didnt occur to me until you mentioned it.

If you have a fx5 or eheim 2262, the back flush port can do that with ease...and it can also be used to do gravel vac too

unfortunately all my filters are DIY filters. from moving bed filter to sponge filter and canister filter... my canister filter can be pump to the outside. i may just do that as well. but my canister has been having some problems lately.. But i will keep this in mind as well! +1 for you too!

well.. Yes but I primarily would like to do this for the grass. No offense to my fish but i dont really think its a good idea to be eating the vegetables that are fertilized with their excretes.

How do you think farmers fertilize their crops, and what happens to all the pig and cow manure?

Well the python for some reason has the weakest suction i have seen. It barely gets the pleco poop out of my tank. i have to use the sink. and like fight the pleco poop by turning the syphon upside down when the poop is in target...

If you're using a sink to suction the water out, chances are the sink faucet is nearly the same level as the fish tank. In this situation it's only the positive water flow from the sink that's keeping suction going out of the tank. If you lower the outflow of the python and use gravity to start the flow it will drain much quicker. Mine took forever using the bathroom sink with its tiny water lines, but with 5 bucks worth of thread adapters hooking it up to the hose of my shower (if I remove the shower head) gives me about 2gpm drain (positive force, faucet on) or much higher with gravity simply by dropping the outflow 2 feet from sink level.

They actually sited him on it having to do something with possible introduction of non-indigenous species as well as improper disposal. They don't care if there is a body of water or not because it "could have been picked up by animals and carried". I would see if running it through a filter on it's way out would avoid fines. I don't get why people are concerned with the fish poop... I would be more concerned about the chemicals in the water and would figure out how best to go chem free... but that's just my two cents.

never used a python, just gravity but luckily im on a hill so no issue with gravity even out of my basement. easy way to start siphon is to put one end under water level, attach other side to faucet and fill hose with water when u see a bit go into the tank stop, unscrew and take that end to wherever u want it. not gonna have enough pressure to run a sprinkler tho

well yeah I guess. but i think it'll be fine if i put it through a pump. I just need to figure out how to put my python to a pump.. or a hose if anything is easier

I just purchased a transfer pump from wayne pumps. It comes with an low water suction attachment. I have not used the pump yet (arrived yesterday) but with the new attachments that I put on aqueon water changer I will unscrew the gravel vac portion of the vacuum and attach it to the transfer pump and vacuum the bottom while pumping out the water. I don't know if the pump will have enough power to attach a sprinkle but I'm sure you would be able to water garden or plants. Here is a link to the transfer pump and there is a video on the web showing the put used for aquarium water changes.
http://www.farmandfleet.com/products/495819-wayne-transfer-pump.html#.UT0O91cRurA , this pump comes in 12v or 115v. I have not tried the pump yet but I do believe that it will work. I was searching for a way to change water quicker without wasting water and this is what I came up with.

Unless the food I feed my fish have added chemicals.. The only chemical I have in my tank is the dechlorinater from top fin.. And I guess that would be an issue.. The only far stretch of danger for this water is the deer.. Because I have plenty of deer.. And some seasons are open season for hunting deer.. But like I said.. A far stretch.. I doubt anything will happen but I will be careful of it as well. Thank you for this importAnt piece of info. Though I still think this improper dumping thing is quite untrue for aquarist... Water is expensive as it is.,, wasting this would only make the world worse.. And we water our lawns anyways...
