I need help with a new 20 Long I am setting up...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What kind of liquid does the sand come with? Mine didnt come with anything... I just put it in a bucket (hose on the bottom) and let the water run for a while until it was clear. Your tap water is pretty good! I wish mine was that low pH. Will you be using dead Corals or chemicals to buffer pH @ 8-ish? Did you decide what filter combo to use?

My guess is that the liquid is some kind of beneficial bacteria "starter" and dechlorinator. Kind of like Safestart and Aquasafe.

The bag says there is no need to rinse just pour in and then just add tap water.

I know I am going to go dual Aquaclears but I still need to make up my mind about which model the 30s or 50s.

Oh and the bag also states there is no need to use fish to cycle the tank.

If its feasible and affordable go with the 50's . You can always turn one or both down. My only suggestion is to use some substrate pro or seachem bio media in them as its much better than the bio provided IMO. My moms aqua clears I stuffed the bags with substrate pro worked like a charm.

What is the full name of this stuff? It almost sounds like freshwater live sand.

CaribSea Tahitian Moon Sand is the name

Then it says all that crap about only needing tap water.

Then at the bottom it says it may be used in saltwater tanks however something else needs to be added.

I will try to get a picture of the bag next time I am at Petland.

So two sponges and the bag of biomax isn't enough?

My water in the 14 gallon is crystal clear running like that.

First off, don't use that SafeStart crap. There are much better BB products out there. The AquaSafe is good stuff, but there are still better de-chlors. IMO, go with SeaChem brand. Available anywhere & really hi quality. I use SeaChem "Prime" de-chlor & "Stability" bacteria supplement. Hagen Nutrafin makes some good stuff, too. I've used their Cycle & AquaPlus before. Whichever brand you use, give it time to cycle.
Rinse your sand, even if the package says you dont need to.
What buffer are you considering? Aragonite, crushed coral, dry coral chunks...?

Crushed coral because it is the easiest to get.

With just 3 fish in there, cycling may not be a big issue. Dont take the bag's word for it though. 90% of the products on the shelf say no cycling is required or they help/reduce/prevent new tank syndrome. Always cycle your tank before adding fish. Also, with just 3 small cichlids, I would add the fish all at once & be ready to do a few WC's during cycling.
The biomedia that comes with the AC's will work, but tcarswell may know of something better.
