Just do a couple of 50% water changes and you will be fine. CA cichlids like hard water and will be fine. A lot of people use crushed coral or calcium based sand in there CA tanks. Nothing to worry about other then dramatic sudden changes in PH.

Good luck

maybe next time you will leave the sand on the beaches where it belongs. hope your fish make it.

Why are you leaving the sand in the tank in the first place if you think it's harming your fish? It vaccuums our pretty easily. Call me crazy, but it seems like the logical solution to not harming your fish.

no underwater vacs available. as for the overstock, they are all still small. africans are 2 inches or less and the RD is only 4. and no other tanks to put them in, i only have a hospital tank and that would be more of a mess at 10 gallons with my tiger oscar in there too.

there are companies taking sand from the beach all the time to sell and when i was a saltwater aquarist me and many others would use it too. have you ever been to kailua beach?

i have two empty 55gals at my moms house and cant keep them here.. mom does not want anything to do with my fish so i keep them with me because i love fish. all of the fish ive had for less than 3 months though. im not going to catch any more until i get my life a little more settled and finish school + i have no room atm for big tanks and i live on a second floor so...

LOL, hey, your fish are going to be fine.

When you washed your sand, you removed most of the salt. The "sticky" feeling you had on your hands is silica which in small particles (e.g. sand) has a high surface co-efficient of friction and feels salt like.

As long as you washed the sand with fresh water, you flushed the sodium and/or potassium chloride solution out.

I got my sand from a beach in san diego.....I rinsed it out for like 30 mins......when i put it into the tank i did a 50 percent water change....just do a couple of water changes.....put your fish in a sepereate tank....a red devil, convict, and two africans are two much for a 30g

you do mean i should put the fish back in the tank with sand in it after filtering out all the salt, right?

edit: thanks donny for the logical explanation of the stickyness. all makes me feel better :)

hmmm i just read this: a 10 gallon fish tank weighs about 120lbs full of water... that means my 30 g is a 360lb block of water sitting on some wood beams under the carpet... and a 55 gal would be 660lbs of water hmm... the world is heavy.
