well if you didnt get the sand from the ocean or if you evaporated it so the salt was removed then you shouldnt have any salt water in it.

salt doesn't evapourate only the water

i think it may be ok the ca tolerate some salt as in when salting to treat illness
do a salinity test and check with some research to see how bad the damage is

Where did you get this idea in the first place? What's with the experimenting?

Ditto?

FYI - outdoor material that is not sterlized can contain numerous contaminates including pesticides, fugus, harmful bacteria, harmful micro-organismisms like parasites, excessive heavy metals especially mercury and a whole host of other things.

Silica and fish................not a good combo. Numerous humans die daily from silica poisoning - couldn't tell ya how much wildlife. Silica is present in many bodies of water but is disipated by trillions of gallons of water not 30.

If your gonna use sand in your tank....salt or fresh water....I suggest buying sterile sand like 3m quartz..................other than that your playin russian roulette with your fish.

Silica is nothing more then glass. Almost all commercail sand is silica based. Saying that silica sand is toxic is rediculous.

I think it's funny that we covet wild fish like they are extra special but when it comes to putting other things from the wild into our tanks it's a big no no.

hmmm i just read this: a 10 gallon fish tank weighs about 120lbs full of water... that means my 30 g is a 360lb block of water sitting on some wood beams under the carpet... and a 55 gal would be 660lbs of water hmm... the world is heavy.

So if 6 people come over to your house do you make them stay a certain distance apart for fear they will fall through. If you house or apartment were made legally under building codes it should be able to handle a 55 gallon aquarium easily. Now if you were talking about a 250 gallon tank then that would be a different story.

As with your salt content

6cups of raw sand is 3oz or about 16 tablespoon of salt but if you washed the sand for 2 minutes it would be half that wash it for 20 it would be gone. If your stressing do a water change it will take care of any saltyness.
