Silica is nothing more then glass. Almost all commercail sand is silica based. Saying that silica sand is toxic is rediculous.

ha....haha.....BAWHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Thanks, that was funny.

Ditto?

FYI - outdoor material that is not sterlized can contain numerous contaminates including pesticides, fugus, harmful bacteria, harmful micro-organismisms like parasites, excessive heavy metals especially mercury and a whole host of other things.

Silica and fish................not a good combo. Numerous humans die daily from silica poisoning - couldn't tell ya how much wildlife. Silica is present in many bodies of water but is disipated by trillions of gallons of water not 30.

If your gonna use sand in your tank....salt or fresh water....I suggest buying sterile sand like 3m quartz..................other than that your playin russian roulette with your fish.

lol... Silica poisoning in humans is from those glass ball packages that come with alot of asian candy to keep them fresh that infants/stupid people die from when consumed for obvious reasons >_>.

as for the first thing you said... well lets look at sand in hawaii for a second...

pesticides: ...no
fungus: on the crystal clear white sand beaches of hawaii... maybe toe fungus from all the tourists sticking their toes in it.
harmful bacteria: remember, we got millions of tourists to be liable for...
parasites: if any propagated on DRY land where i got the sand from, i doubt its amphibious...
heavy metals: excessive??? haha

UPDATE! yes! all my fish are fine! i borrowed a D.O. meter and Hydrometer from my professor and the salinity reading is ZERO!!! YAAAAAAAAAAAY!!! i must be a good rinser ^.^

Wow..........guy wants to run me over, another thinks silica's not poison, and another thinks life doesn't exsist in the sands of hawaii.............everyone is entitled to their own opinions but this kind of disinformation is absurd.

nope. didnt say that. but certain things you've stated being in our sands wouldn't be credible unless you came here and analyzed it but the reason i disagree with you is because there is solid evidence backing the theory that the sand is not harmful as there were no cases of it ever being harmful. especially kailua; one of the most non-polluted beaches on this island. let alone the fact that your talking about Hawaiian beaches that rely on their cleanliness as part of their appeal for return tourists with a good impression and reputation.

now if i took sand from say, makaha or anywhere near the end of the alawai i wouldn't doubt the misophobic mayhap of what harmful* substances, bacterias and microbes might be in the sand other than salt.

as for silica, you must be worldly confused between solid* silica GLASS and silica GEL with the many cases of GEL balls poisoning people...

ADDITION: oh yes there are ghost crabs, sand turtles, and dying man-of-wars living on the sand. also fruit flies at times and none of which seemed to be affected by the "poison" silica levels you speak of. also lots of burrowed morays, hermit crabs, snails, SW guppies, and thousands of other fish living inches away from or directly in the sand under water.

actually im curious now, knowing that our beaches are NATURAL and that 99% of true sand comes from wave-crushed coral, does this mean that coral produces silica? the very symbiotic home of reef fishes produce a poisonous substance by that statement of yours sir.

I'm not the one trying to run you over. Just stating a point that you are completely contradicting yourself. You state that silica is toxic and that the sand from a beach will contain this harmful silica because there are low levels of silica in the ocean. So you then recommend the guy buy 3M colorquartz instead!! Hello, 3M colorquartz is almost pure silica!!! Silica is crushed quartz.

Please explain how you claim silica is so bad at low levels in beach sand and then you recommend buying nearly pure silica????? You do understand that play sand is silica sand, right? Better keep the children out of the toxic sand box!!

Silica poisoning is related to breathing in glass particals. If you work with this stuff and breath it in over a long period (years) it will build up in your lungs and can be very harmfull. Essentially filling your lungs with tiny glass particals. Much the same as the conditions known as brown or black lung.

You are the one spreading misinformation!!

Silica aside, what about the possiblity of bacteria, parasites and pollution? Do you just take out door rocks, and drop them in your aquarium? Taking sand from the beach is the same thing. Sand is cheap to buy and you know it is safe. Why be so cheap?
Also play sand has a fair amount of clay in it, and it isn't 100% silica.

I in no way ever said that there were wasn't bacteria or the possibility of parasites. I simply stated that the sand your purchase are hardware stores is largely silica and the sand recommended by Otherone is silica sand.

If it is not illegal to take sand from the beach I have no problem with it. Rinse it really well then bake it in your oven and you are good to go. Plus play sand is very cheap, but aquarium sand sold at pet stores is not cheap. Maybe the OP preferred the look of the beach sand to playsand. Plus for CA cichlids he gets the benifit of some PH buffering from the beach sand. I get a lot of my rock and all of my driftwood from lakes and streams. If you treat it properly you have nothing to worry about.
