i think your dead on.

You're saying he picked up a Astronotus "Columbia, Rio Caqueta" from a tank of Petsmart red/tigers?

Yes, it looks similar. All juvenile oscars go through that color phase when small.

I have also worked with fish, and been around more than my fair share of small oscars. It's a normal tiger that has kept its juvenile coloration longer than normal.

I'm done with this topic. Post some new photos when it's larger. If it looks different than a tiger, I'll eat crow.

:chillpill: dude. This isn't meant to be a heated discussion. I'm just trying to find out for sure what kind of Oscar this is. Why don't you post some pics of normal juvenile Oscar coloration so we can compare. Because I can't find a single photo.

Probably his parents/grand parents/somewhere in lineage was a wild oscar. Honestly to me it's just an oscar. You really can't say what river it's out of, or what his parents were. You can only say what it looks closer to. IMO just a normal oscar for the most part with unique patterns.

The point I'm trying to make is that I don't know if it looks like a juvenile regular Oscar or not because no one has any photos of one to compare mine to. As prevelant as Oscars are (arguably the most popular cichlid in the hobby), it's astonishing no one here or on the web has any photos of any juvenile Oscars.

To me, it looks a lot more like the photo I borrowed from the Japanese site than any other Oscar photo I've ever seen (keep in mind, I can't find any photos anywhere of any juvenile Oscars that look remotely similar to this one.).

But thanks for the opinions. Keep them coming.:)

I know I'm gonna get sh*t for this since I'm not an expert and I've just started with Oscars but here is some stuff I found on the web.

Could this be him as an adult? IDK but this guy looks sweat.

I love this color variation. Anyone know about it? I think it is a "true" wild but IDK.

there are many many colorations of oscars. Not including the dyed ones. Petsmarts oscars fade a s**tload, so I really don;t know. My g/f bought one that was as red tiger as can be and its in a 75 now and its looking like the regular oscar coloration.

That could be a faded red tiger due to stress and other things, or it could be a zebra oscar, black and white oscar, "wild oscar" whatever you want to call it. It will probably grow up with an olive and black color and an orange "eye" on its tail.

but thats only a guess.

just google more pics of oscars, there are tons.
