Ideas for new fish room please!!!!!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Make sure you insulate the bottom of any tanks/ponds going directly on the floor otherwise it will stay considerably colder than the room (and the rest of the tanks in the room)

For electricity I would personally look into having a secondary breaker box in the garage with 2 or 3 15 or 20 amp breakers wired to it. One big breaker means any problem and the whole room is out of power. Also with a 30 amp breaker you also have the problem that the wiring you would have to use would have to at least be 10 guage. I would use gfi breakers or have the first outlet in series be a gfci outlet.

As far as humidity obviously use moisture barriers where you can. Keep in mind though you dont want to lock moisture into any walls. If the garage has a tight moisture barrier on ouside wall preventing moisture from getting in and you have one on inside wall preventing moisture getting out then the moisture that gets in (some will) will get trapped inside the wall with your insulation and wood. Moisture barriers are good, but if you trap moisture in areas that dont breath you do more harm than good.

Heating the whole room is really the only way to go.

Also may I suggest doing some LARGE DIY tanks in there. I had a fish room once and let me say that one or two LARGE tanks is much more rewarding and satisfying than a bunch of smaller tanks. Easier to maintain too.

Completely agree. That's why I am building one big tank in my fish room now.

Make sure all your electrical outlets are GFI not just regular ones. That way they'll trip if they get moist/wet and won't kill you. Make sure you have at least 2 or more circuits in the room. My electrician wired mine into one instead of the 3 that were in the room before and it constantly tripped.

yeah thats the fibre stuff chemicall, am i right in saying that this stuff costs a fortune , now im starting to get worried about the cost of this whole project  not.

another great plan dude

LOL I like your thinking.

Don't use 1 32 amp breaker like mentioned, get a few circuits in there, all with GFCI breakers.

Do you plan to just show the tanks off on stands or frame it all in for a nice beautiful viewing area and a rear servicing area for the tanks ? Don't know how big your garage, but that's the plan for my basement, have the viewing area, then the service area...

32 amp breaker is just for sockets in garage if need we just add another run not very hard, electrician who has had experience with breeding discus told me what to do

What would be value in having the large breaker over a few independent ones where a short or other failure affects a smaller percentage of the room? After you factor in cost of more expensive wire and breaker it should even out to have multiple breakers for the room.

Depending on distance from main breaker panel I think it makes sense to have a large wire to a subpanel in the garage with the subpanel having like a 50 amp breaker. From there I cant think of a reason why you would want to wire the room to a 30amp breaker though.

Every fishroom should have it's own sink. The bigger the better. I have a ss restaurant sink in mine.

yeah i think i get what you mean mate, it will save alot of trouble in the long run, if there is to be any trouble that is

One thing I wish I had in my herp/fish room is a generator.

i think a generator in a garage would seriously piss the neighbours off, they can get noisy when on constant dont you agree?

so all the sockets have their own trip box hmmm i think thats the way forward matey ;). yeah i plan on boxing them all in with a rear service area, but only along 1 side and the back then the other side i was thinking a nice big pond for my cats to live happily ever after :headbang2

i think these dudes might have a valid point m8 as far as seperate trips go, its a very reasonable and safe way to go so i think thats what we need to be looking into right now ;)

 to the multiple breaker idea, me likes it :D

Multiple smaller breakers are better than one big one.

:iagree:

its a thought im trying to work on right now, i know the garage is large but didnt have much time to scope it out properly, a sink in there would be ideal for what i want to acheive :headbang2
