What is the dimension of the aquarium? How big is the Oscar? How long have has the Oscar been in the aquarium?

it's a 6 foot by 30 inches by 30 inches tank (280 gallons) with a 120 gallon sump. the oscar is 1year old and currently 8 inches and has been in the tank for around a month.

For true schooling fish, I agree silver dollars would be good, or pinktail chalceus. The chalceus tend to be aggressive to each other in small numbers, but you have a big enough tank to do a big enough group, and they seem to do OK in numbers. Maybe a school of 6-9. For another cool south american oddball, how about flagtail prochilodus.

6ft length of the tank and amount of time the oscar has been in it, will make it more challenging to add other fish. An oscar that size can easily defend an 8 foot space. If you do find large enough shoaling fish, I would add no less than 8.
