Hope you don't mind, I lightened up one of your photos to help show the differences.1365936
I find panamense females have a dorsal similar color pattern to some of the Amatitlania.
Below A. nanoluteus
female above, male below

and Amatitlania myrnae

and even in A. sp Honduran Red Point
female

male

Here are two different variants of Chuco intermedia.

above female left male right, of one variant, and directly below, female with eggs of same variant

ist variant male

and another location variant below, male left, female right

below the other variant, female with spawn

and with male below in the upper half of shot

In the genus Nosferatu the female shows the colorful and dark dorsal spot, also the tuxedo lower body color

males not

a little clearer in another variant below
male

female

Note also the difference in body shape and head profile.
Females much more torpedo shale, males high profile
and below a female in full tuxedo spawning dress

In Maskaheros argentea, my females always showed more dark markings, and a less steep profile
young female below

now, young male below

also note the lower fin trailers of the male, in comparison

In the southern South American genus, Australoheros, again the females have more darker pigment
male

female below

but once in spawning dress color differences are profound, and size is most telling, females being (on average) at least 1/3 smaller

Great read! Very informative. Do you have knowledge or advice on sexing differences in Heros species?

In efasciatus, notatus, rotkeil, Inirida, and the other undescribed varieties, the males will have striation and/or spotting on the gill covers and across the bridge of the nose. Females will have a solid or mostly solid face with no markings.

In liberifer, males typically have small black freckles on the gills while females have few to none. I have seen males with none so it's not 100%. My pair from Atabapo both had solid faces with no freckles, but my pair from the Negro had spotting on the male and none on the female.

In severus, males have profuse dark maroon striation/spotting on the gill covers and nose. Females may have solid faces, or they may have faint red striation/spotting like males which fades to a solid face in spawning coloration.

In the tank bred "super red" variety, females have a mostly solid red face while the males have clearly defined striation.
