Illegal fish questions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If it's a chain store I would say more than likely your dealing with this one person trying to seem like they can do things others cannot. If the actual management found out this person was claiming to be able to get illegal species they would put a stop to it!
I say speak to the actual manager . Forget about trying to report something.
Agreed.

I know personally Petsuppliesplus does not sell illegal species in the Stores in my area Segrest Farms is their vendor and some species they have like polypterus with the exception of Senegals are not in the stores systems. I had a assistant manager special order a Delhezi for me.

That's great advice....not to mention you don't know for sure that they are trying to sell you an illegal species. As Oddball Oddball said, rose jardini aros can be called red arowana. Common names can be a confusing mess in this hobby. The fact that it's a chain store in Ohio makes me pretty sure they won't be offering any asian arowanas for sale. Not to mention, even where they are legal they cost thousands of dollars...not something you buy in a chain pet store!
They do sell some expensive fish though they do have motos and I know they can get a few more species of sting ray

I know that I am a young kid but I want to make a difference in my community for the fish fans I have taught a lot of people stuff that I have learned from you guys and I have tried myself and I don't want to tell someone to do anything unless it works or one of the more we'll know guys on this forum give me the advice first I really do look up to you guys but there is only a few people who I have learned not to listen to

Thank you for your advice I really have been looking up to you in this community and I will listen to you now if they do get some illegal fish into the store what would you recommend me doing
I appreciate the compliment. I never try to give wrong information.
Like I said earlier. First be sure what you're dealing with. Make sure the species you're looking at is what they say it is.
If it turns out to be illegal then point it out to an actual manager. (Personally I would doubt that any legitimate vendor would ship a chain store an illegal species) but it could happen. Their are black market sales of banned species. It does happen from time to time.
Last resort would be to report it to wildlife officials.

I think you did the right thing here. You came to a knowledgeable website and asked questions and voiced serious concerns. It may lead to a point where it becomes certain they are selling things illegally, in which case, other actions are warranted.

The naming people put on fish is certainly part of the confusion, and it doesn't help if a person gives out misinformation in a store. But sometimes, that's all it is.

Thank you I will do just that and I will make sure I bring it up I will wish for a little while to make sure that it is illegal and what they are selling is. I am going to try to special request the red arowana to see if it is Asian I will send pictures

Thank you. It's hard being 17 and trying to tell people what they need to do with their fish. I work at pet supplies plus and I am known as the fish guy because I do so much research about fish but it's really funny when you get older people coming in acting like they know what they are talking about when they have only kept a betta in a 0.5 gallon tank haha. The look they give me when they realize I actually know something is so funny

I'd start buy asking point bank if it's an asian or not. Ordering fish you don't intend to actually buy is not a very good way to establish a good reputation in the hobby.
