the chlorine in the tapwater kills your beneficial bacteria

Your Assuming everyone has city water. What about lots of us that have wells? We don't have to worry then.

The reason you want bacteria growing on your sponge is the same reason you want it growing on your biomax. The more the better why would you want to kill it off.

Who cares about the bacteria growing on sponges. Your going to clean them thoroughly anyways and you have bio media to house 99% of the bacteria you need anyways.

It aggravates me when people try to talk about the "extra" bacteria you can have on your sponge. Guess what, you not going to have that much more because if you keep cleaning your sponges, its going to take a while for bacteria to grow on them. Plus, if your bio media is not housing enough bacteria, you need more media or a different filter. Don't rely on sponges for bio filtration since you clean them off anyways and loose all the little bacteria that has accumulated.

If your bio media has enogh surface area to house enough bacteria for bio load of the tank, and your tank is matured, your not going to get "more" bacteria. The bacteria you need is already there.

this thread it nuts :screwy:

the poor guy must be so confused right now :irked:

i guess its one of those topics where you ask 10 different people and you get 10 different answers...

if i were the original poster, i would pick one of the members who seems to make the most sense to him and continue this via private message.
just my opinion.

Exactly! This is not a difficult issue!

ok what i just did was a 25% water change...took out the sponges....squeezed them in dechlorinated water... THEY WERE BLACK. in fact when i pulled out the sponge the water turned really merky...so i take it me cleaning it like i just did had to help...so after that i put the sponges and the ceremic stuff that came with the filter back in...i did take out the extra media i bought...it was free floating and hard to get back in.. i then added 10ml per ever10 gallons of stress zyme directly onto my filter media..then used ammo lock for the new tap water i put back in...sound good?

I do agree that the filter sponges aren't where you have to worry about killing the bacteria off the sponges, but if there's chlorine in them, when the water goes through, it will pick up the chlorine and it may get in the bio-media. I use tank water so I don't have to worry about dechlorinating my rinse water. I try to clean the mechanical on one of my filters every water change, which is done once a week usually. The only time you should clean your bio-media is when it gets gunked up and that should just be cleaned in tank water. Bderick knows what he's doing, so I'm not arguing with him, just stating how I see it.

I would have used Stress Zyme, too. I used to use Kordon NovAqua or Amquel, but now I just use regular dechlor. Prime works similar to AmQuel. I would use one of those products instead of AmmoLock, but I've never used AmmoLock.

I have been having the same problem with my 210, but it's because I killed some BB during a move and a couple times after that, it happened again, so I came to the conclusion that I had too much bio-load for the capacity of my bio-media. DO NOT use Top Fin Bacteria Boost. I used it once in a 10 gallon and a ton of sulfur got in the water and killed everything. I smelled the bottle and it smelled like Sulfur. I used Stress Zyme the times before and will continue to use it if necessary, but if everything is going right, it won't be.

I don't think you're losing BB during water changes. It's probably lack of bio-media.

I hope that wasn't confusing...
