the chlorine in the tapwater kills your beneficial bacteria
The reason you want bacteria growing on your sponge is the same reason you want it growing on your biomax. The more the better why would you want to kill it off.

i guess its one of those topics where you ask 10 different people and you get 10 different answers...

I do agree that the filter sponges aren't where you have to worry about killing the bacteria off the sponges, but if there's chlorine in them, when the water goes through, it will pick up the chlorine and it may get in the bio-media. I use tank water so I don't have to worry about dechlorinating my rinse water. I try to clean the mechanical on one of my filters every water change, which is done once a week usually. The only time you should clean your bio-media is when it gets gunked up and that should just be cleaned in tank water. Bderick knows what he's doing, so I'm not arguing with him, just stating how I see it.bumpylemon;2463534; said:ok what i just did was a 25% water change...took out the sponges....squeezed them in dechlorinated water... THEY WERE BLACK. in fact when i pulled out the sponge the water turned really merky...so i take it me cleaning it like i just did had to help...so after that i put the sponges and the ceremic stuff that came with the filter back in...i did take out the extra media i bought...it was free floating and hard to get back in.. i then added 10ml per ever10 gallons of stress zyme directly onto my filter media..then used ammo lock for the new tap water i put back in...sound good?
