How do you add salt all at once or 1 spoon at a time?

3 tsp at a time, 30 second intervals

whoops, meant 1 tsp at a time at 30 second intervals

more importantly

how big was this tank?

if your treating for ich you want to go for 1-2 tablespoons fulls per 5 gallons of water. you mention 1 tspn at 30 sec ntervals.....well how many times?

you know alot of you failed to ask these important questions and quickly jump to a conclusion without fully analysing the situation.

lesson learned.....to be continued....

the tank stays around 81F. It is a 29g growout. I was looking at the little bodies, and they all looked like their skin had been burnt off in places. Since I dumped the salt in, I imagine they must have laid on it and gotten salt burns.

I burned a rope fish a long time ago doing the same thing with salt .I poured it in and it sat at the bottom and fried my fish

no you dont

i dumped it in a glass full at a time in my sump or in the tank itself, ive never had any issue with it. it would be better because it mixes in with the water gradually as it disolves, better than having a rush of water with a extremely high salinity (in the glass or cup or whatever)

Yes you do.....There are two aggregates of salt commonly used. One is like a table salt aggregate, the other is like rock salt. The one that is like rock salt, needs to be dissolved. The other dissolves rather fast.

Undiluted salt can cause shock and burns, especially in bottom dwellers as that is where the salt concentrates.
But for future information you should know that many bichirs such as senegals and reedfish are very salt tolerant (senengals are even found in mangrove swamps), though while young it is best to make these changes slowly, over a couple days.
I disolve salt in warm water then pour it into the inflow from the filter to make sure it is evenly distributed.

he said undiluted, not undissolved.
