Had a Ryukin Goldfish in my tropical tank for 4 years, the only one that wasn't a fan of his was one of the pink kisser. He was about 6"-7" when he finally passed a few months ago.
also housed a pair of Red Jewel Cichlids for a few weeks until my BIL tank got set up, they were curious, but never messed with my blue lobster.

4 Clown Loaches (1 inch at most, just added a week ago)
1 Male Convict (3-4 inches)
1 Red Belly Piranha (2 inches)
1 Red Finned Cigar Shark (aka Sultan Fish, Mad Barb etc etc) (7 inches)
2 Common Pleco's (3 inches)
1 Blue Gourami (4 inches)
Heavily planted at this time, and lots of filtration and circulation. Dimensions are 36*18*16
I have a few other tanks ready for anyone who needs to be moved. This tank is in my room so I can keep an eye on any problems. The temp is usually a little higher than 25, and I use metal halide lighting.
The only tank-mate that had to be moved was a smaller Gourami who was getting nipped non stop by the piranha. Now that he's gone, there have been no problems for 2 months.

Anyway, my new tank is a real bizarre mix of native and tropical.
I have 5 sunfish (2 pumpkinseed, 2 blue gill, and one green)
2 small bullhead catfish
1 Demon Eartheater
1 Rainbow Shark
1 Bosemoni Rainbow
4 Australian Rainbows
6 Irian Rainbows
4 Bloodfin tetras.
and 8 snails
it is also heavily planted (with sturdy plants)
The Green Sunnie and Demon Eartheater don't get along at all, but other than that, the tank works. I think due to it being overstocked, no one gets a chance to setup a territory so no real aggression there, and the Rainbows and Tetra's are just big enough to not be considered food, so they are left alone. It may be an odd mix, but it looks really cool. The bigger fish beat up the plants a bit, but all in all they hold up well, I just occasionally have to scoop out torn off leaves.

Blood parrots with an African kenyi cichlid and natives of North America and at one point bumblebee gobies. Also there is a mosquitofish with guppies, never nipped their fins off. Do I mentioned that I had a Daffondi with guppies and bumblebee gobies?
