Sorry if i offended anyone I am not trying to and even though i am very one minded on this subject I hold no ill will towards people who disagree with me I just get carried away when debating sometimes :evil_lol:

If you believe in evolution you yourself could be a hybrid.

I am a cross between a tomato and a flounder. I would also like to be crossed with Scarlett Johanssen.

Don't feel alone.... I've had to edit some of my own posts.....they were smokin good but I did the right thing in the end. :swear: stupid right things

id buy a glowing fish for sure

Playing God = Trouble. There are just some thing you shouldn't do man, harm the fish or not, its still not right. Greed is the problem here, and there is no garuntee that it will actually work. How many tries/fish is it gonna take before you get it right? And how is there no harm to the fish? You've got to somehow splice it into the fishes gene code....which last time i checked involved physical interferance for lack of better terminology. Its just gonna continue to 'pollute' the fish industry.

You are doing this for one reason to make money or you wouldn't be seeing who is willing to "buy" them.

We will never agree on this subject that is for sure if you want to go fiddle with centuries of evolution for monetary gain be my guest but please do not be so arrogant as to claim you are helping the fish. ;)

Where do you all see greed in this i am not saying it will be all for the good of the fish but if the prices are even half of what he says then he would need some sort of income to use as capitol am i not correct so before one goes plunging into finacial hell by mass producing this glo-cichlid he merely may have been asking where people would by them so he could get a feel of the market for them to gain capital for his project. Mind you if it made enough it could easily replace dyed fish and thus be much more benifical to the fish in the long run.

and all things at first would require physical interaction i would think, evolution itself requires it from the enviroment, i owuld think the first few that may die would be well worth eliminating dyed tortured fish.

it sounds like a pretty tried and tested method it has been used on rats for a while i learned about on a tanget in my behavior modification class.

on my behalf i think the human race has screwed up enough things and if we can fix one i would be one step closer to being proud to be human. I would buy one if i wanted after seeing one

i will adress the nastier responses first- A) I would only sell to people who a re responsible (I realize that this is a subjective distinction) B) this would not harm the fish in any way

now, These fish would be genetically altered to produce either luciferin and luciferase, which are responsible for bioluminescence, or GFP. This color would not fade, as teh fish's genes would be producing these proteins. It is possible that the fish will be able to self regulate when they glow with GFP, and almost definitely with blue bioluminescence. However, the luminescence will definitely show. While I would like to make these fish breedable, I will most likely not due to the risks of GMOs interbreeding with natural populations. It would be something akin to the modified danio rerio selling under the name 'glofish'. These fish would be sellable in the US (indeed, most likely only in the US, as that is where I am located). Also, the nature of the genetic replacement will either cause near to the entire fish to glow, or else will glow along natural color pattern lines in the fish, depending on the techniques used.

finally, a message to all, but especially any potential or past flamers:

You hate dyed fish, I hate dyed fish, we all hate dyed fish. I originally thought of this idea to substitute for dyed fish, as suggested in one of the posts. So ask yourselves- would you rather preventa possible solution to this practice, or would you rather just continue to be angry at those who do it?

Have you seen Jurassic park. I know it's not real. But the theory was that the Dino's would not reproduce because it was controlled and as evolution even with out this movie has proved is you like the Dr. on the movie are wrong in your projection that they would not be breedable.. How would you garauntee that? How would you mass produce?

On top of that if you no the way people are, you know they will buy your genetically mutated fish no matter what . So why ask the fish keepers that care about their natural and inbred and mixed specie fish.

If you choose to due this you will indeed make allot more than your obviously afraid of losing. If your looking for approval.. It's inside of you. You can do it. You just need to believe for yourself that it's right. Not for us to make you beleive.

If you invent it they will buy it. It's the American way!! LOL

:grinyes: I really like the idea and wish to know more :headbang2
