IS 265G BIG ENOUGH???

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The Frontosa is a deep water Tanganyikan and really requires much differant water paramaters and subdued lighting (High K mixed with Actinic) similar to reef lighting to be as happy as they can be. I would give them a tank to themselves. As far as aggression goes, the previous posts were correct, the Jag can be rough but in a 265 I say go for it and if it's too much for the others cull them by what you like the most. Keep what you like. Jags are very cool and GTs are among the most beautful cichlids around the rest are a dime a dozen.

I'll probably end up setting my 55g up as a frontosa species tank, but as far a the others being a dime a dozen, that electric blue jack costs me 40 bucks, thats quite a few dimes lol

Sorry, not the EBJD. I ment the rest. Did not mean to insult you.

dude u need to do some research on the fish that u want first. to make sure that they are from the same area and same water conditions because u are wanting to mix cichlids that come from different water and i am not saying that it cant b done but its not natural its best to keep African cichlids with other African cichlids and south American cichlids with other south american cichlids and centeral american cichlids with other centeral american cichlids because they all require differante water condictions. so please do some research before u buy them

electric blue jack dempsey is not a hap.

Yeah..I know that...I just need to read a bit more carefully next time...I didn't catch the JD part at the end :hitting:

you simply canot keep and agressive cichlid with a semi agressive cichild. you have to get cichilds with the same temper to hold there grounds. example..... a jag and a ebjd are not gunna work neither will the firemouths

I don't agree with this statement. To say it simply can't be done is just not accurate. A lot of times, keeping a more mild tempered cichlid with one that is much more aggressive works well because the milder cichlid doesn't threaten the more aggressive cichlid...therefore, no need to fight over territory...provided there is enough territory.

Usually, I'm not a big african cichlid fan, but there's something about fronts that I find fascinating, but after all the things I'm reading on here, I seriously considering a separate tank for them so that I can match water conditions for them a little better

Keeping the fronts in a separate tank is a much better idea. ;) They do best when kept in colonies...1 male to every 2-3 females.

None of those are extremely beserker aggressive except the jaguar so you'll probaly have a bunch of bluffing but no bodies. You may have to remove the jaguar if it becomes to aggressive. If they already have the pecking order from the growout tank they probaly won't take long to reestablish the order. I would not add the wild caught frontossa though as it may not be used to the water parameters. The oscar or jaguar may still try to sample on the bichir though. Honestly leave the jaguar out & all should be well.

:iagree:

the funny thing is, at the moment the jaguar is one of the lowest in the heirarchy, right now its: the bigger JD, Oscar, bigger Firemouth, smaller JD, smaller Firemouth, GT, then the Jag, EBJD, Frontosa

trust me...this will change...I had a similar combo in my 125 a while back..small jag, midas, firemouth, jd and gt. the jag was smallest and got pushed around by the firemouth. the midas <female> was queen of the tank. then the jag hit 6" and literally took the tank over. the jag owned 3/4 of the tank while the others all cowered in a corner.

you're gonna need a much larger tank than just 55 for fronts. they can grow 14" or so though they do take a long time to get there. eventually a 180 would be ideal for a nice colony of fronts. :)

The only concern i would have with this combo is with the Jag. other then that, that would be a cool combo. There is alot of us on MFK that mixes SA/CA/NA and african fish in there tanks. Try it out, if it don't work....buy more tanks.

you'll have problems with the fronts they require different parameters
