Can you guys tell me, how many pounds of sand would I need for a 125g tank, and what kind of sand should I buy?

ive heard that pool filter sand works really well, and i believe you can get it some what cheap at home depot or lowes. one question i do have tho, is it possible to remove my gravel then add the sand with out removing my fish. i dont have any were to put them.

i just took a net and scooped out the gravel a little at a time. once i had the gravel out i did about 25-50% water change because of all the junk that got moved arond. once i cleaned the sand i just dumped about a 2g bucket full at a time into the tank. after a few minutes (while the sand settles a little bit,) i turned the filters back on. i keep my intakes about 4-6" above the sand to reduce the amout of sand that is able to get sucked up. and during the entire process the fish stay in the tank. i have done this a couple times and havent lost a fish.

oh and i got my Pool filter sand from meijer for $8 for a 50lb bag. for a tank your size i would go with about 2-3 50lb bags. i dont know the length of your size tank but my 4' 90g has 2 bags in it and that gives me a good 2-3" of substrate depth. it really depends on how deep you want your substrate. i would try to use 2 bags min but probably look better with 3. and i love the way it looks. i will never go back to gravel once i have gone to sand. i changed once, then went back to gravel now i am at sand again and i love the way it looks. its so much nicer. you wont regret it

how many bags would you use for a standard 55 gallon.
