Is converting to sand worth the hassel??

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
when i had the sand in my 55g i just used one bag it looked alright because the 55g isnt that wide so it gives you a decent depth for substrate. pool filter sand is pretty white, i wouldnt say pure white but its nice and with the right lighting it looks awesome. in my gallery there are a couple pics of my old JD you can see the Pool filter sand in those pics.

its definately worth the hassle as you called it althought i thought it was pretty easy just time consuming.
i have never gone back to gravel for well over 7 years.

Well I went and did it lol!! The sand is in and the decore is back in place, just waiting for the cloudy water to clear up. Got it done with only 1 injury, hoping it isnt fatal. My leperinus freaked out when I started pulling everything out and ramed himself through a hole in a rock that was too small for him to fit. The jag took this oppertunity to bite his tail! Opertunistic little brat! Anyway he was jammed in there so good I couldnt push him out either way, Ive got these big dykes used for cutting thick pieces of copper wire, I was able to break/cut through the rock with them to free the fish, but he has lots of damage all around his gills where he wedged himself in:( Other than that, went real smooth, and I THINK he is gonna make it.

i think pay day im going out and buying some sand. i wanted to do it first but didnt have any research done. now im set on doing it.

I changed my 20g to sand, and thought it would be a pain...

I took half the water out and used a container to take the majority of gravel out. I was worried that taking the remaining gravel out would be hard, but I just used a siphon tube (took the gravel catcher off) and sucked all the gravel bits up - it was easy!

I used pool filter sand, and it looks awesome.

Cleaning with my siphon isn't too bad, I just keep it a few inches above the sand and don't lose much. It is light stuff, but it doesn't get suspended in the water easily.

Fish poo shows up a lot though, because it doesn't get hidden in cracks like gravel.

Ok I got the sand in what do you guys think? Its still a little cloudy but I think it already look SO much better than it did with gravel!!

Very nice. I like it a lot. I will be picking my "red" sand up tomorrow.

I wish you could get it in a darker color, but I'm 99% going sand anyway. Gonna grab some PFS...you think if I call HD or Lowes and ask what color the PFS is they'll think I'm weird/nuts? :)
