Is It True or Not? GT HELP THREAD!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i have read about some sexing saums by the amount of orange on the fin edges. thicker band = male, little to virtually no orange = female. how true i dont know. all the females i have seen pics of seem to hold this true but it may just be a few.
the slope of the forehead is also used by some so i have read. my male held true for the banding. his orange was very bold and thick on his tail.
the aggression may also be non existant. my male was very docile, he bit me mind you and took blood. i put 2 20p sized uaru in when he was 5" or so and he guarded them. it was a gamble that paid off for me. but i have heard of others that rule and are absolute tyrants and own everything in a tank from other saums to red terrors.

In all honesty saum's are no easy task to sex if you've never gotten to compare a male and a female side by side in your own collection for a bit.

There are tell tale signs such as finnage and coloration - but they're still not totally reliable.

I would say just wait for it to grow out and see how the forehead developes at an older age - or wait to see if it ever drops a tube.

im leaning towards female on the saum. males are more colorful and their fins tend to flow longer. the fish is still small so hard to tell.

I never heard about the blue anal fin for males and green anal fin for females thing so not sure if it is true or not.

Attached is my very aggressive female...

In my experience, Saums are a slow growing fish. However, they respond VERY well to a varied diet and large frequent water changes. I was able to get about 5 inches in a year on mine (in a 10g none the less) with 5 small feedings daily of krill, NLS, omega one, worms, and algae discs (omega one, not crap like tetra). I also did 2-5 water changes a week of about 90%.

saum, male id say.

you live close:)

Thanks guys, I thought it was a Gold, does anyone have any inkling of the sex. I posted another pic up I know its not great, camera is crap. Anyoune give me some pointers between male and female Gold Saums? Anybody got some pics of for comparison?

Thanks Cichlid2006 great answer and appreciated. I'm also in the UK any members got advice on the best food brand easily available from LFS's
Is the spawning and growth size thing true?

As i was taking some more pics my Pearsei kept on getting in the way couldn't resist posting them!

This was the pic that made me think it is a female. It looks a lot like my darling.

As stated definitely a Gold Saum. Based on the pics and your descriptions of growth I would lead towards female, but really there is no way to know for sure on the available information thus far.

This is absolutely 100% a Gold Saum. It is a Green Terror, just not what is referred to as a True Green Terror. As said True Green Terrors are very rare in the hobby. I do have F2 fry available for sale and 1 adult male F1, and I know Jeff Rapps had some a little while back, but apart from that they are widely unavailable.
