Is my tank somehow cycled

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Nitrates are 40ppm 0 nitrites and just some ammonia

You can't have "some ammonia" in a cycled tank. Half cycled tank will have anything but ammonia reading in it as that stage of the cycle is fastest. Some dead bloodworms may be enough to start a cycle but are not enough to sustain a sufficient colony of bacteria to keep fish alive. T

wo weeks is not enough by the fastest standards of cycling unless you've got cycled media to start with. Wait 4 weeks at least before adding fish. Drop some more bloodworms in the mean time...Or you'll end up spending money on meds for the next 6-8 months as fish introduced to an immature tank eventually succumb to disease after disease...And yes, that's how long it can take for severely compromised fish to suffer after they've been owned by the impatient fishkeeper, and with the best efforts, they still die. The new round of fish then turn out to be miraculously healthier :)

Does your tap water have nitrates? You can't have "some ammonia" in a cycled tank. Half cycled tank will have anything but ammonia reading in it as that stage of the cycle is fastest. Some dead bloodworms may be enough to start a cycle but are not enough to sustain a sufficient colony of bacteria to keep fish alive. If there's ammonia now, considering there's no bioload, you'll certainly have much more when you add fish and fish food to the tank.
