Is my tank stingray-compatible?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Going to be Hella Honest here!

Your question is "Is my tank Stingray-compatible" The answer is NO. No matter how you try to justify it, the floor space of the tank is to small. It is A KILLER looking tank, and there are a LOT of kool fish you can keep in it. I would love to have that tank.
As for the ray, I understand that 1. it's way kool 2. you have a rare opportunity to get one 3. you want to help the ray, but really in the end you won't be helping the ray at all.
1. The ray needs more food than its getting~ So its going to out grow you fast.
2. I have never heard of a permanently "stunted ray" only sick rays don't grow. So your already looking at problem
3. Rays are a huge commitment~ You are getting a lot of advise on not getting this ray at this time. People are telling you that it will out grow your tank in 6 months or less. So even attempting to keep it for as you said "1-2 YEARS" is ridiculous! You are guaranteeing that you are going to kill this ray in my OPINION

Now that you think you want rays, do a lot more research and wait until you can get the proper set up. By the time you get the proper set up and do the research, you will be more then ready for a ray.

how many people have to tell you that your tank is too small of a footprint even for a juvinile ray? Just because your tank is slightly larger does not make it any less hellish on that ray.
If you can't afford civility, I'm not interested in anything you have to say. Yes, several people have kindly stated their opinions and I have only posted the question because I'm willing to hear them. You are the only person trying to flame me for a fish I haven't purchased, which is living in worse conditions, and over which I've been deliberating for days. If I were an irresponsible hobbyist, I would simply get it.

I've checked the media lounge and there are 90 gallon tanks there. You can pick on their owners if you like.

There was nothing offensive or uncivil in what I said. Yes the truth hurts sometimes but we have already been around this time and time again in this thread.

Yes the fish at the store is in horrible conditions and we applaud you for wanting to do something. We have said that.

What you fail to realize is that buying that ray to put it into a slightly larger tank with your footprint is not doing it much better. Also note that in about 3 months as the ray gets healthy and grows it will be in the EXACT same condition in your tank that it was in the store.

What we all dont get is that we are telling you not to do it for the reason that your tank is not suitable but yet you keep coming back to it. I htought it was done and you got the message then you posted again today about it so obviously it had not stuck. All you would be doing in buying that ray is giving it a very short reprieve from death but then it would be in the same hell in a few months as it outgrew your tank.

Yes other people get tanks not suitable for their stock. Most get flamed for it. I am far from flaming you as you were at least smart enough to ask for more information before making a dumb decision and getting the ray. We all applaud you for that but we also beg you to not get the ray.

Thanks. My original plan was to get a permanent home for my young silver arowana in the future, large enough for both. I thought that I might keep the stingray and arowana by that time. =/

Did I miss where people suggested a smaller species of ray?

True Hystrix, or Scobina?

People said you could potentially get away with a pup if you were willing to upgrade your tank within a couple months but you stated before that a new larger tank is a while off for you. That is only reason people said to wait then.

You stated in one of the last posts you were looking to geta larger tank int he future so get the ray then to join your arawana. There will always be some ray/fish that needs to be saved from being in a tank that is too small...

I've been told that my tank is too small for any kind of ray, even pups.

Depends on species....

Some species grow really slow. You may get by for years before needing to upgrade....

I had to go out of town for a few days and was shocked to see this is still going on.
Look, your tank is good for a community tank. I like your tank, its a nice tank. BUT, the tank is just to small for a ray. No matter how you look at it, its not just the gallons that make a good ray tank, its the footprint. the floor in your tank is just to small. Its not healthy for the ray. NOT enough room. I hate to see any ray in a small tank like you said it was in now (believe you said around 66 gallon tank) but the footprint of your tank is not any better for it. Please, maybe find someone in your area who already has rays and let them know about it so thay can help and get the ray into a better tank than what it is in. But, the bottom line is, untill you get a larger tank, (long, lots of floor space, etc, etc) Its not advised (and Im sure I speak for most of us on here, and that is ok to do) that you dont get a ray of any kind for that style of tank. You asked us what we thought, we gave you the best answer we can give from owners who already know what works and doesnt work, please take our advice.
Its just not big enough for a ray and is not advised that you get it.

Sorry, I don't know anyone like that. So if my tank is not sufficient to keep the fish alive, that stingray will definitely die a painful death in the future. I've also learned yesterday that the guy does very little water change, if any at all.

Then again, I give up, not my responsibility I guess. =/

Any experiences about that?
