By any chance, Is everyone feeding the night crawlers from Wal-mart?

Yup. Started after the pups were born. The remaining pup still gets the same crawlers and eats like there's no tomorrow.

Damnit. If I just lost 2 $500+ Marbles to something that could have been prevented with a friggin bottle of Prazi I'm gonna puke. 2 FEMALES non the less.

We'll find out soon enough. Prazi went in 2 days ago. Knock on wood but the male looks like he is breathing better today.

Trev Prazi haulted your Leos breathing issues didn't it?

yup... we found out that a parasite came in w blackworms (as far as we know). the rays started breathing out of one side, then slowed eating.

these parasites spread to all the rays pretty quick but never infected any fish.

wal mart crawlers is what i used. Matter of fact i had these last 2 that died the male i had for 5 months eating shrimp. then i purchased the female that was only eating crawlers. 2 days of feeding crawlers and dead. ate out of my hand that night, dead the next day. wow. and the 9 that died on me i was feeding 4-5 dozen a day. all from wal mart. r u kidding me? i lost 12 mm all due to crawlers? and why would it hit them diff. then the leo or reg motoros?

i feed my rays crawlers from walmart and havent had any problems

Too early to tell yet on my situation. I think IF it is indeed a parasite problem I'd blame goldfish long before crawlers. Not saying its not possible, if I recall I think Nic has mentioned something about fail mart crawlers and parasites. I would just think in my case the goldfish may be a more likely candidate. Hopefully I get it all figured out soon. This crap really wears a person down.

Yeah been feeding Walmart crawlers couple times a week for a year now to my
rays without an issue. I do open each container (before purchase) to make sure they
all are active and appear healthy, also to make sure no mold or fungi is growing in/on
the dirt. Plus to get the ones with the largest worms. LOL

Best of Luck DB, Just keep your head up and your attitude positive.:)

please let me know what exact parasite you are thinking could kill a ray from an earthworm?
I refer you to shadowstrider's quote in this instance

Easier said then done. The last female was irreplaceable and one of my favorite rays. Never seen a similar one.

Ray loss sucks. Job loss sucks. Put them both together and its a true test of will. Doing my best though and hangin in there.
Could be a lot worse.

Thanks for the support guys.

Been feeding Earthworms for years. My take on this is all animals have parasites including ourselves, however terrestrial creatures such as worms, crickets etc cannot live in an aquatic environment and neither can their parasites so they wont cross infect. So long as the area where you collect your worms from is free from man made pesticides etc then they are safe.
Golfish however suffer with intestinal parasites aswell as external protozoa and flukes,i personally wouldnt feed such fish, certainly not live ones, from frozen perhaps, but thats all.Rays must have a good resistance to many of these parasites judging by how many people feed live goldfish,i just dont think its worth the risk.I can see why people feed these fish to newly imported rays, they will often take them immediately which is often the difference between life and death for many rays that arrive in an emaciated state,if the ray looks to have good body weight and not in a critical condition i would always start them off on the trusty old earthworm if i was going down the live food trail.
As always.......just my opinion.
Sorry for your loss DB.
