i totally disagree with they are black cuz they are stressed.i have a black jack dempsey and ive had him since he was a fry in a 90 gallon peaceful tank. only color on him or her is the red on its dorsal fin tips...i mean its prob not a new type but it could be a "retardation" haha or something.

aside from the astronomical size of that picture I agree that the darker color on a dempsey isn't stress. Dempsey's should lighten in color when stressed, not darken. Darker colors indicate aggression and/or dominance. the higher up the chain of command in the tank the darker they should be.

the most stressed JD I ever saw was not long after I got into fish keeping. Went into this lfs and saw a fish that was so stressed and light, I thought it was a misshapen texas. I bought the poor guy, took it home and put it in my tank. After less than a minute in my tank it turned the normal color of a typical JD.

:)

no such thing. i bet i could get any of the so called black dempseys to lighten up with white sand and other aggressive cichlids with it.

Some JD's are black. WTH is mythical about that? :screwy:

And can you make the picture a little bigger???

I can hardly see it.

:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:

EDIT**much better! Still laughing over how big that was.

I have seen many "black" JD's. They vary in color with stress, dominance, substrate, etc... Also I have seen many "black" junenile JD's. I bought one that was jet black but it has since started to pearl up and get a little lighter in color.

Oh yeah, next time make the picture a little bigger.LOL

haha i didnt know the pic would be that pics...i just copied the url from my other post on this thread hahha.

Is it a "new color mutation" such as the Blue Dempseys or Gold Dempseys... absolutely not...

Are there Dempseys out there that are genetically programmed to be darker than "normal"... of course...

Does Stress/Dominance/Environment have an impact on the coloration of Dempseys... naturally...
