remember if you have dark coloured gravel
your fish is going to try and be that colour ..
survival skills its called blending in with its habitat
my jds are dark coloured because i have black gravel
when i had sand they were so grey so theres my opinion

Dude that thread is 2 years old. There new info out there along with DNA testing that supports the recessive gene making it a fact and making post #6 worth nothing.

Ah, and for what it's worth, red all posts after post 7... You will get TRUE information.

That whole thread is a discussion without a definate outcome... There wont be one either, in that thread or this one, because there isn't any true proof until a sucessful breeder of EBJD's pipes in. This thread is just a bunch of opinions being thrown out there. Test results aren't facts. They're just test results. At least post 6 has references. More than I can say about anything in this thread.

Also, I agree with gravel and decore not making much of a difference. My "not a black" black JD was in a tank with black gravel and a black background and was black. He was also in a tank with a blue background and white sand and he was JET BLACK all the same. However, when I added my new tan one to my tank, he turned mostly black for a few days because of stress. This type of blackening wont last long term and isn't the same as an all black JD.

How are test results not facts? LMAO!:nilly:

my female dempsey was largest and most dominant fish in the tank in september of 2007 and she was always dark, now that she's the smallest and at the bottom of the pecking order she is always very light. There is no "black dempsey" and its certainly not mythical

While I feel most "black" JDs are simply normal JDs that happen to be in a "dark" mood, that's not to say that a true "black" JD isn't possible. Hypermelanism is a rather common recessive trait in many animals. Examples being black leopards, hypermelanistic snakes (Boas, Hognose Snakes, ratsnakes, etc.), and fish (Black Sailfin Mollies, Black Moors, etc.) to name a few. We've already seen Electric Blue, and Gold Morph JD, so why not Hypermalanistic? The only way to prove this would be selective breeding projects. Just my opinion.

Because if you go to the DR and get tested for HIV and it comes back negative, there is still a chance that you could have HIV. Odds are you don't, but tests can be and sometimes are wrong. Thats the same reason forensics dont hold up in court. Tests aren't proof of anything beyond probability.
