*tee-hees herself silly*
I knew Kara and I were right to call her Lucy!!! ^_^

Too bad you couldn't get a male, then I could've just gotten a baby Rhom from you guys!!

Anyways, I hope you find her a boyfriend, but at least you're doing SOMETHING right since she's laying eggs!! Keep up the good work!!!

lol! i'm not so sure putting a male in there would be a good idea. :D she isn't a fan of anything alive being in her tank.

Hey, it was the thought that counts!!

If you could get your hands on a male, you could Artificially Inseminate.

I'm sure it wouldn't be too incredibally hard to incubate them. That way, the male stays in one piece, Lucy stays in one piece, AND you get baby Rhoms!!

It's a win win sitchi-ation (spelt wrong intentionally) all the way around!!

how does one go about getting rhom semen? i'm not milking one!

Unfortunately the only way to get sperm from a male piranha would be to kill it and take out the testes.
How common is it for a Rhom to lay eggs like that? Ive never heard of it happening before, though I have been out of Ps for awhile...

Why would you have to kill him and remove the testes?! That's ridiculous!! In the wild they don't get eaten to fertilize the eggs!!

Jordan, you would just about HAVE to milk him!! Fortunately, it's not as nasty a process as you would think, considering I've had unintentional luck "milking" bluegills and some sort of larger toothed fish. All you'd really have to watch out for is those teeth.

Anyways, if you COULD get a male, you just gently squeeze the sides of his belly (watch where you're aiming his vent o'course) and VIOLA!! You have inseminated Lucy's eggs!!

Man I wish I could get down there....if you could find a male, I could even help you out there. (Being a livestock breeder means you have a lack of fear of the nasty stuff.)

OR, you could ask nicely, then give him a collection cup, and let HIM do it!! lol maybe he'll be happy to oblige!!

unfortunately i have to agree w/ JD7. they arent bluegilll. something needs to trigger the sperm to come out. when this happens w/ bluegill they are usually ready to spawn and are full of it.

anyway...does anyone have a mature rhom i can borrow?

youve never heard of a rhom laying eggs in aquaria? i take this is somewhat of a rare occurance then? it was a bummer to know they werent fertile...

I really, REALLY hate my computer!!

At any rate, the sperm is constantly there, whether it's breeding season or not, it just needs the trigger to be performed (pressure on the testes) in order to appear. Considering the fact that the fish's testes have no clue as to the difference between the stomach muscles squeezing, or your fingertips, piranha mortality is not a requirement.

It would be an experiment to TRY, Jordan, considering OPEFE says that they've been captive bred, but only in large, densly planted tanks. But they were naturally bred (meaning on their own)

If you needed to kickstart the male's production, take some of Lucy's water, and use it to cycle, and freshen his tank. She'll put out hormones, and pheromones into that water, that'll get him ready, along with the good high quality care he'd get at Casa De La Demjor!! I'm just trying to figure out if there's a way to then get her BACK into breeding condition....or you would have to wait until she cycles around again, maybe about a month or two.

OH BTW, they get that deep black color when they're in breeding condition (thanks ot OPEFE for that info as well!!)
