how did i not see this earlier. that is great. how big of water change did you do?

thanks dan!

i can't think of what may have caused it? i have been doing the same water change schedule the entire time i've had her. 1-2 50% water changes per week and ive been adding salt every water change because of her severe injuries when i first got her.

right now i'm waiting to see if she lays again. if she does, i may try to think of a way to breed her. maybe house a male down stream of her on the other side of a divider?

if anyone has any input on this feel free to post

I would think a divider would be the only way it could possibly work. rhom's have bred before but it was in a large pong in FL sometime ago. So I think you would be the first in a tank if you were successful. maybe call the water co. to see if they have done anything different to the water chemically. I dunno but don't stop what you are doing.

i don't plan on letting it rest. is there a way to sex them? i have read a few places that their anal fins are different, but i'm unsure of the accuracy of this.

i wish i would ave recorded my water params leading up to this! i just never expected this to happen. calling the water company may be a good idea.

I sent you a list of how to prepare them for breeding, by similating the rainy season.

Here it is again:
You will need to give your black piranhas a varied diet to get them into spawning condition. Recommended water values are in some degree related to which river in the Amazon your black piranhas originate from but pH 6 and 24-28C / 75-82 F can be used to breed most strains. The water should be very soft to breed this species. Rain season simulation helps trigger the fish to spawn

You could try the screen, that might bring them in at the same time, but how is he supposed to fertilize the eggs on HER side of it?

there is absolutely no way to sex s. rhombeus. The site that _sushi_ referenced could be considered the piranha bible. I bet Frank the auther of that website would be interested what is happening in your tank. You should send him a email.

That was what I was worried about...we get a nice big tank all setup for breeding, add a divider and another big rhom, and we don't even know if it is a male or not. Quite a lot of effort, money, and hopes, but if it worked it would all be worth it. We will email that guy tonight when we get a chance and see what he may have to says. Thanks.

The powerhead would be on the side of the female facing downwards as a "downstream" effect. There are holes in the divider for waterflow and circulation. When she lays the eggs, they are pushed by the powerhead to the other side of the divider. Then they are on the male side, and hopefully he will fertilize them. Thats the best way I can figure.
