I am thinking male.....

Just for a reference, this picture was taken a month ago, when the JD was about 2":

And here is the picture taken tonight, JD is just about 3 1/2":

I think that is pretty good growth. I am also very pleased with the amount of color he/she has put on. The black spot on the side has nearly vanished, and the fish's head and body are much broader. As far as personality goes, the fish still swims at the front of the glass when someone is at the tank, and readily accepts food from the hand.

Nice fish, looks male to me. :)

Excellent thread! That fish is without a doubt male. His head is thick, finnage is tall and long flowing, and the lower half of the gill plate lacks spangling. He is a beauty.

Very nice JD. I also think its a male

Great to see you changed from 50-60% water changes to 20-30%. I do 30-40% and thats perfect IMO. Too much may stress them. Looks like you've nailed it. he's growing steadily and more quickly than I (and probably many of us) expected. of course it helps to have a 55 to yourself when you're 3" long too :D

Can't wait to see him in another month. One suggestion If I may...I fed my GT and JD earthworms when they hit the 3-4" mark. The high protein bulked them up very quickly. Plus they love to take them from your hand. I wouldn't feed this every day but 3-4 times per week I'd give them 2 or 3 a day. Really helps their growth rate IME.

Great fish...GOOD LUCK!!

wow, you are having a much quicker growth rate then my juvi JD. Mines also jet-black most of the time.

Mines the same way!! Maybe I should be feeding him more bugs!!

JD is looking real good!!!

Thanks everyone for the compliments! I will keep posting weekly updates as long as people still seem to be interested.

Having a 55 by himself (barring a 2" Bristlenose Pleco) is probably helping his growth tremendously.

I think that is a great idea, I was actually planning on substituting eartworms for bloodworms/frozen kill/live food every few days. Great input.
