Bummer, sorry that you lost your fish. Just a random thought, but spinal injuries and/or nerve damage can sometimes cause loss of pigment in a fish, so if this fish is skittish as you stated, it's possible that this started with head/spinal trauma.

Yea, could be. He was also a captive bred JD from my equivalent of PetCo, and was about 6 years old. From what I am reading 8-10 is the lifespan, so maybe age played into him succumbing to this so quickly.

Either way I think cichlids are off the table for me, too many things that just kill them in 48hrs. My catfish and bichirs seem like they could survive a nuclear attack and they live forever - more my speed haha.
