  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
75 is just for growout as I’ll getting juveniles. I’ll be upgrading to a 6ft tank in December and if that’s becomes cramped up for my fish I wouldn’t mind upgrading in the future. The thing is that my mom loves the EBJD as it has a cool blue colour and stuff, I love Jags and my brother is a fan of oscars. I just want to give it a try. If it starts getting bad I have a few friends who will happily take care of the EBJD and the Oscar for me. I won’t let any fish die that’s for sure. If I want to go with these three what size should I go for? Like should I get 2” Jag and 3-4” Oscar and EBJD. I plan to give them a lot of hiding to stop them from fighting, would also add some dithers if needed. Also, what food will be the best for them at this age?
Thank you so much guys, y’all have been of great help <3

Australian rainbows would make good dithers. Oscar is an inch per month and will outgrow everyone else fast, so initial size won’t be too important. Make sure the jag is the smallest so it may be scared into being nicer. I would get the jd the largest at about 2-4 inches. Hikari cichlid gold is a good food, all my cichlids love it, and have been eating it since they were really small.

How long would it take for them to initially start accepting pellets ? Would hilarious carnivore sinking pellets work to get them accepting pellets?

All of these should be pellet eaters once you get them. You can try bribe shrimp and bloodworms early on top of they don’t touch pellets, and slowly make those more of a treat. They will be stressed after transfer so they may not eat for the first few days. I prefer floating food cause it seems like my cichlids don’t touch anything that hits the ground. You may want to start with flakes actually because it will be easier for the small fish to eat. I definitely recommend a catfish of some sort (probably a Raphael) just to clean uneaten food.

Part of cichlids diet is snails. I wouldn’t get too attached to snails in a tank with them. Not sure how the deal will be with an apple snail the size of your fist, but a 16 inch jag probably won’t be too forgiving and would harass it.

Also, I was planning to do a black water set up with these guys, y’all would recommend?

It’s fine, apple snails are easily available here and are cheap so wouldn’t be much of a problem

Jags and JD do not come from a black water setup. Lowering your water parameters to a black water setup will degrade the health of the jag and JD slowly over time.

Dithers do not work at distracting cichlids from territorial fish and reducing aggression. You need target fish, and the best target fish for cichlids are other cichlids.
